This is exactly where I'm sitting!
I also didn't mind the prequels either..With some weaker than others, but like you I've failed to connect with any of the new characters.

Po - just appeared out of nowhere
Fin - just appeared out of nowhere
Rey " "
And just about every new character

Then they just kill off all the old guard unceremoniously, apart from Leia (shes a female so she can just fly in space)

R1 was the only decent new installment, but even that was probably 30 mins too long.

I think there are many reasons to dislike TFA and TLJ but to be fair, character introduction wouldn't be one I'd choose.

Rey appeared in pretty much the same way Luke did in that they were both just milling around a desert planet when the war found them (through BB8 / Finn escaping & R2/C3 looking for OB1). Poe's introduction as an ace pilot is not hugely dissimilar to Han's only he was in the resistance as opposed to a smuggler. And Finn introduction as a disillusioned ST I really liked.

I know not everyone agrees with this but I actually thought there was reasonable chemistry between Rey and Finn and Poe and Finn in TFA, and BB8 was a good support droid. The problem for me (albeit one I accepted as a reboot) was the complete lack of originality in TFA.

TLJ was a whole different matter imo; any chemistry went right out of the window. But frankly, that is way down the list of my issues with that abomination of a film.

Tbf, it's been reported Harrison Ford only returned to the role on the condition the character was killed off. I watched the documentary 'Empire of Dreams' where he was saying he wanted the character killed off in the original trilogy. Doesn't mean they executed (if you'll excuse the pun) it well but I think Han being killed was always going to happen.

I wasn't opposed to Han being killed but the execution was weak.

Luke being killed was a shock and it was completely uncalled for. Leia should have died in TLJ and Luke should have been the one left in the final movie just like he was the one that faced the Emperor and Vader in ROTJ. Now, they will bring Luke back as a force ghost and I suspect they will push the boundaries with what force ghosts can do and we could possibly see a force plain type of saber fight with Luke and Palpatine, which admittedly, sounds amazing.

I was also disappointed by Snoke's early demise. I felt that he was being built up well in TLJ and for Kylo to kill him so easily was frankly ridiculous. Especially when you consider it was only a few hours ago that he got bested by Rey in a sabre contest and she fought off his attempts at mind reading. So I guess with Snoke gone, they only had one card left to play, the emperor. The reason why it pains me to see the emperor back was because of the story the prequels and originals told. It was a story of Anakin and his rise and fall and eventual redemption against the greatest sith lord ever. To bring him back pretty much undoes everything Anakin went through and Luke's journey in the originals.

I'll concede that some may find my lack of positivity disturbing but I will still watch this movie will tempered expectations and if it gives me the nostalgia and good action, I will be content.

The TV shows however I am all over. First episode of the Mandalorian on November 12 has my lightsaber trembling

But then, what about his Darth Plaguis story.
What if he had found a way to immortality.
I’ll conceed that if this is the direction, i dont have a problem with it, except this should of been dropped or hinted at in the earlier films.
It is fair enough to be a bit skeptical on how they have arrived at this point. Are they still just making it up as they go?
So with Fisher passing, if she was to be the main protagonist in the 3rd film, then there had to be a major re write.
So do they get a pass for this?
If the rumour is true of the floating dismembered hand of luke floating through space, then i’m thinking JJ always intended to bring back Palpatine.

So, we he massive fleet of Star Destroyers we see are Empire Star Destroyers Esther then First Order Ones.

A secret, hidden mahooosive fleet of Empire built Star Destroyers. Interesting

I'm not sure Palp would have been the intention from the start; I can't see room for both EP and Snoke in a trilogy. Feels more likely that it's forced by TLJ and the premature killing of Snoke.

That bit is really intriguing imo. I read on a site that some of the recent SW comics (I don't read them) had a storyline of EP sending fleets to the outer rim to search for 'power' (assumed that was force sensitives) and they could be returning now?

Yeah, I'm a movie and cartoon guy rather than comics. Read a bunch of books years ago but don't really remember the plots, so have no idea about other canon.

But yeah, these trailers are just hitting all the right buttons for me. Death Star 2 wreckage, Empire era Star Destroyers, what looks like Rey and Kylo fighting on the DS wreckage. There looks to be so much crammed in here.

Ok i’m sure it isn’t just me, but when a new Star Wars trailer drops, it often hits the right buttons. Dont think ive seen a bad star wars trailer.
I’m not even counting this one. Purely as that ending with Rey just came out of left field! That wasn’t a proper trailer.
But thats the one thing Disney/Lucasfilm can take for granted, they can show all the shots out of context and we will lap it up.

Yeah, its masterful.

They put so many little teasers in there that we can't stop talking about it and the hype just kicks in once again.

I like to think I'm a fairly intelligent fella, and I know that they are totally playing with me, but I fall for it every time.

Separately...anyone read that Death Troopers book? The one about zombie Storm troopers?
