Gareth Barry

Strong rumours that he's set to sign for us tomorrow.

For a season, I think it would be a good signing. Never been blessed with pace so his game won't be affected massively by his age. Another option in the centre of the park and has a much better passing range than Fletcher who's moved on to Stoke.

As long as we bring in another midfielder (box to box like Delph) which we apprently will, allowing Sam Field to leave for the Championship on loan...I think it's a good deal.

Gareth Barry is a class player.

When you see him live you realise his worth to a team.

I wish Barry all the best, he's been a proper pro for us, never whinged when dropped, and got on with his job when called upon. Barkley should take heed.

Barry has played 30+ Prem games in 18 of the last 19 seasons. He's finished in the top half in 14 of those, and in the top 6 in 10 of them.

In a team featuring Stekelenberg, Baines,Coleman, Jagielka, Williams, Schneiderlin, Bolasie,Lennon, Barkley and Lukaku, Gareth Barry was still voted their player of 2016.
He may be knocking on; he is still one great player and will certainly do a job for a year or two.

Coming around to Barry. Initial concern was the age but said for a while we have lacked a midfielder can just keep the ball and recycle possession.

Can't understand why so many are concerned with Field going out on loan though. The Championship won't suit his style at all so not sure what he is going to learn being kicked about in the Championship for a season. Think it would be more beneficial to stick around a learn from Barry who is a similar type of player.

Barry is a cracking player. Will be a loss on and off the field, but if we want to move up the table then we need someone more mobile-we have him in Schneiderlin.

Just don't think he's ready for our first team. Thought the game passed him by against B'mouth.

A year at Norwich get weekly football can only be beneficial to his progress in my opinion. Leko and Harper to.

The comment wasn't directed at you JH, as I agree he struggled a bit on Sat and he isn't ready to be starting 30+ games a season. It was more a general observation how a lot of people want to send him out on loan just because (some have probably barely seen him).

For me the best way for him to learn is to is keep him in the PL. Unless we sign another CM he will probably still get opportunities. Could end up with another Thorne situation. 6 months in the Championship was supposed to do him good but eventually they get comfortable and dragged down by mediocrity around them.

Personally would keep hold of all of them until the loan window re-opens. Then loan out the ones who aren't going to play at all this season, maybe Wilson and Harper (who looked good on Sat).
