People who make fun of his goalscoring don't take into account that he's hardly had a consistent run of games in his whole career. That's 2 goals in 3.5 league games now. If he keeps his spot I think he can definitely get 15 league goals which would be a very solid return for a wide player. This plus his work rate and athleticism means he can be a great asset for us this season.

Why does Spurtle always seem to appear on Arsenal threads, foaming at the mouth?

Foaming at the mouth? Hardly.

Calm down Cujo.

He's not underrated. Most fans see him as he is, very good outside the box, terrible inside it. His second goal did surprise me though.

He doesn't get a consistent run of games because he doesn't score goals, not the other way round. It's not like managers don't want to give Welbeck a chance. Two of the PL's greatest managers have tried coaxing his goalscoring game out of him, to no effect. Not enough composure.

There's an element of that but it's been so long since he started more than 5 games in a row for us. Last season for example he scored at Anfield then had 4 starts in a row without scoring and got dropped. Then he came back in against United and scored.
The season before that the most he got was 5 starts in a row as well where he got 2 assists and a goal but then got dropped.
2 full seasons without more than 5 starts in a row! Most attacking players will struggle with that. His only consistent run for us was when we first signed him but that's 3 years ago now and we forget that he was only 23 when we signed him.

Let's be blunt here, Welbeck's finishing is dreadful - everything else about him is very good but finishing is quite important for a striker
His first goal today came off his shoulder, if he'd headed it properly he would probably have missed it
His second goal was a moderate effort which should have been easily saved but somehow Begovic made a horlicks of it.
Welbeck has his uses but they are limited to workrate, making a nuisance of himself and running the channels...

Nah, his second was a very good finish.

You clearly don't like Welbeck.

Watch the replay, Begovic overcommits his balance to the near post, there is no way a top goalkeeper should be beaten from that angle & range by a shot as soft as that.
It's not a dislike of Welbeck, unlike Walcott I admire his heart & tenacity, it's just an acceptance over the years that his finishing ability is poor.
