Puel Painting and Decorating.

Good morning, Puel Painting and Decorating. How can I help?

Hiya, I’m calling up about the paintwork on the outside of my house it’s not qui-

-good isn’t it?

Well....no, not really.

Oh.....bit pessimistic aren’t you?

Well I’ve been watching the progress of the paint job and I’m not sure it’s going as well as it cou-

-When were you watching it?

Eh?

How long have you been watching them paint it?

Well I was watching them before I went on my summer holid-

Ahhh, don’t worry about it then.

What!?

Don’t worry...if it’s before your summer holiday it doesn’t matter....go anywhere nice?

Well Mexico...the weather was lovely and ....what!? Wait!...What are you talking about!?!

It only matters what has happened since you’ve come back.

But I am back and it still doesn’t look right!

You’re quite a negative person aren’t you?...

Right, I have been paying each week, trying to be patient for this house to be painted and they have left the back down the side completely exposed and a mess, despite having someone who can whip up the ladder proficiently and get the top part done on his own they have 3 other painters dangling off the ladder right behind him and getting in his way when I’m positive if they just had one bloke holding the ladder just behind him and the other two painting a bit further dow-

-you aren’t seeing the plan and the future...

What!?

You clearly just don’t like our company or are narrow minded...

I’m paying for this! And maybe I’m not a professional decorator or run a paint company but I’m pretty sure they could be doing this quicker and better.

I’m paying too...

What!?

They are painting my house...

The same crew?

Yes.

In the same way.

Yes.

And your happy about how it’s been going?

I don’t worry about what’s happened, I went on holiday too. You need to look at the plan and the future....

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

-the bloke holding the ladder behind the lad up top, he’s new AND young - good ain’t he?

Well yes....but I’m pretty sure if he had more room without the other two dangling on the ladder next to hi-

We have brought through other young painters you know...

Well that’s good, there aren’t enough being brought throu-

-they painted for a big national company the other day. Well...one watched them paint...but that’s thanks to us!!

Well that is nice and I’m sure they will be great but about my hou-

-you aren’t seeing the plan and the future...

You’ve said that...and I still don’t know what you mean ??

We have the young painters....and the future....and the plan...

I just want my house painted in the best way that it can be! There are clearly some good painters and I see that but if they just were used in a diff-

-they paint more up and down than sideways now you know...

Yes. I noticed they stopped doing that sideways painting...I’m not sure why they even started it that way but I’m glad it’s stopped.

See. The plan....and they are more confident when they are passing the paint brushes to each other than before my summer holiday to Dubai...

Ooo Dubai, hot I imagine...hold on...you said we shouldn’t look back before our holidays??

But the painting the sideways and now the painting up and down...and now look how well they hold the brushes and confidently stroke the paint across the brick....even that bloke painting the slab at the back...

Well....yes....I’m pretty sure he was confident passing paint brushes around anyway, he just seems that sort of player and I’m not entirely sure that he wouldn’t be as confident if they painted in a different way. Actually, I’m not sure they were as unconfident as you are suggesting they were before with the paint brushes. In fact, I’m not really seeing how this specific strategy of painting is improving how any of them are performi-

-Negative again!

Look, yes they are passing the paintbrushes around better...but maybe they could still pass them a bit quicker and up the ladder a little more efficiently. This isn’t me having a go at the painters, I know they are trying and some things have improved...although they were quite efficient at the beginning so I don’t know why your manager changed it....but anyway, I just think all the painters and ladders and brushes are here and in good order but, as mentioned, if they could just be utilised in a slightly diff-

-which company did you use before!?

Sorry?

This is about that other company isn’t it...run by Nigel....he drinks you know...

What?? ...eh!?. No!? ....I don’t care!!

You want to use them!

No...<deep breath> I’ve already said - I can see there are good painters I’m just not sure your manager is-

The Puel Paradox!

It is a problem, though. As in life, many things can look like a mess if they are to be judged on their current state rather than what they are to become.

You give the adage of Rolf Harris in your article. (I don't know whether that's an acceptable adage these days but I'll go with it...) He had a catchphrase of "Can you tell what it is yet?" The pro-Puel argument is essentially the same thing. A masterpiece is being painted but it's only half-complete. The problem is, to us mere mortals, how can you tell whether it's genuinely a masterpiece or a lunatic splashing around? Or anywhere in between?

That's why I'd want to know what exactly we're aiming for, how far along the track we are, whether Puel thinks we're on schedule and where he can be assisted along the way. At the moment there's a load of paint splashed on a canvas and no, I can't really tell what it is yet.

Nev, you speak like you can see what it is yet; can you tell us the style that we're going to be playing in, who we're going to be emulating and how it can work against the high press without exceptional players? Because how else are we supposed to judge a transition period that could be indefinite.

Completely agree Dunge in terms of being abstract about the long term plan and I think that is the main confuddlement and simultaneously, the main reason we, I think the owners included too, are persevering on the whole.

Yet, there is the imediate affect as well. Unlike a piece of art that can be added to and created over time, which can sit and wait patiently without repurcussions or like a bottle of fine wine that actually gets better if it’s just left alone for a substantial amount of time, there is a short term plan that must be in place - even if it is one that is to plug the leaks whilst the ship sales to an altogether different destination.

And this is the main concern for me. Even if there is this master plan that is an upper echelon beyond my level of thinking, there is also the stark reality that the immediate and first port of call for Puel’s ship: avoid relegation and/or avoid the sack. Of course, if we look at just ‘this season’ - Nev, you, me, mostly everyone I imagine is right when they say just on game time and results, it’s too early to judge. Yet, I find myself so frusfrated, because irrelevant of the long term voyage, there seem to be other less choppy navigations to follow in the meantime which not only wouldn’t steer us off course but may, through minor deviation, ironically out the wind in our sales towards what Puel wants.

Ps Nev, don’t be offended, I am only being light hearted. Whilst we debate in different ways and have different views I don’t mean to come across like I’m putting you down my fellow fox

Not offended but i will still go with the painted wall or one of my half finished designs. we are five games into a Puel team playing the Puel way if we are still getting four put past after ten games then there is a case for getting a new painter in,but it think Puel will get this season to paint the wall

Well, the next 5 fixtures are relatively favourable. Arsenal away is standout tough; the others there are opportunities to get points from. That then makes 10 league games.

14 points+ after that would (hopefully) be signs of progress.
11-13 would leave a question mark.
10 points- and I think it'll be hard for him to keep his position.

I never thought I would find such great appreciation in the comparison of Claude Puel to Rolf Harris.

Great post KTF - a lot of effort went in to that. I hope that whoever manages the painting, we end up with a beautiful Monet, rather than the Picasso of a football team I’m currently watching!

Eh, that doesn’t make sense. Ahh well.

KTF - what about the painter who's still on the books, lightning fast and highly effective at coverage but isn't doing anything because the rest of the painters can't manage to give him a brush? Surely your house would get painted if he was used properly; you know, like the way he painted a house a couple of years ago - that was a work of art!
