DPL vs Sunderland

Sunderland would probably be comfortable leaders of League 1 if the number of players to make up a team was doubled to 22. Every day I read of some player they are interested in signing and they must be in danger of running out of lockers in the dressing room. Phil Parkinson was seriously in danger of losing his job when they came to us a few weeks back. Since then they have turned their fortunes around and we will be truly up against it on Friday. Given the quality of their squad it is not encouraging to observe this as it indicates that they may have at last got a leader who can combine the considerable talent into a real force to be reckoned with.

We have not done well against them even when they have been otherwise in mixed form, so the prospects of even a point do not look good.

So I am opting for a 3-1 defeat (Anderson/Taylor) whilst of course always imagining that we have the ability to win if do not get overawed by the occasion. I have not done the research, but I suspect we have lost more TV games than we have won and there may be a connection because it is usually the well-supported "big clubs" that feature. And the big clubs in question are often not doing all that well when we have met them in the past

Lanza: There are a number of reasons for being more optimistic. Of the 9 teams above us we have played 7 away.

Despite only retaining 3 of the players who lost the play-off to Charlton, we have rebuilt and have lost none of the useful players with which we started the season; the longer they play together surely the better they will get.

A year ago we were on 46 points in 7th position, 11 points below the team in first place and 1 point off the play-offs.

It is much tighter this year and we are 9 points off the lead.

So, all things considered, we are doing better than average, yet obviously the play-offs and promotion are the yardstick which govern our ambitions.

So, on this basis, we ought to have a good chance of improving our position and an outside chance of getting into the top six. If we can usefully strengthen, then surely our odds will improve.

So I look forward to what lies ahead in the next three months or so.

Well done to the 2 optimists who went for the draw. Most of the rest of us will have been pleasantly surprised that we were wrong.

It seems like Charlton are now after Idah. The only sliver of comfort you can get from this is whether there is a guarantee of regular first team football with a Championship club... possibly not.

Got to be said that our two CBs were amazing, then again the whole back line were brilliant.
Just a pity Tayler has got a 10 bob head 😂

Devante Cole

I think we can no longer expect Adam Idah to come to us. The Norwich manager said after being forced to leave him out of the weekend squad 'So harsh on Adam but he is in my thoughts and we have created some space for him to allow Dennis Srbeny to go. At 18, he is the third striker at Premier League level. Not a bad position to be in. I am happy with him. He is a great lad.'

Cole has played a fair number of games for the “Well”, often subbed off in the second half; his most successful recent spell was at Fleetwood where he scored goals and said he was happy. Obviously Wigan didn’t suit him and he did not seem to do a great deal on his Burton loan. However DM does seem able to get the best out of players and he has obviously got ability which we must hope can be suitably shaped.
