Is Zidane any good?

- Barcelona in disarray
- Refereeing favours
- Strong squad in a "weak" league
- No discernible style
- Oversaw one of the weakest title defences in years
- Only succeeded at one team in one league

vs

- Domestically outperformed both Barcelona and Atletico in 2 out of 3 full seasons, and also in the 20 league games when he first took charge
- Won 3 CL titles on the trot, spanning 33 games, up against the best Europe had to offer
- Twice transformed a team looking badly out of sorts to league champions in his first full season at the helm
- Combined maximization of experienced players with thorough use of the squad depths at his disposal
- Beaten teams and won titles both with an attacking style and trading punches, and setting up a notoriously weak defensive team to post the best defensive record in the big European leagues

Where would you rate him in the current mix of leading managers (such as Klopp, Pep, Jose, Poch, Conte, Allegri, Conte, Sarri & co.?

Does he get more/less/just about the right amount of credit he deserves?

i think this season's league title is ZZ's biggest triumph as a manager

the squad without ronaldo doesnt have the same firepower as during his first managerial spell.
he took over during the tail end of a v poor season and with a v disjointed team

this season he has made the team work much harder off the ball, and become much more solid and compact

he varies his tactics and squad according to the opposition and situations in matches well i think, ensuring all his players get game time and buy in to team

his best quality as a manager, i think, is his pragmatism

in an era dominated by footballing ideologues , like fraudiola, he has shown a different way to succeed

“ As for ruining players, every top club has had more than its fair share of top-drawer players who haven't made it. Singling Madrid out for that is a bit of a lazy stereotype”

But enough about Mourinho

Seriously though, How many are actually "ruined" and how many simply reach their ceiling?

Looking back over the past few years, a host of players signed by Madrid as teenagers or in their early twenties have also gone on to enjoy glittering careers with us. Benzema, Ramos, Marcelo, Varane, Casemiro to name a handful off the top of my head. Valverde is already looking like a top prospect. Others have faded once they've left, e.g. Higuain, Ozil or Di Maria, not while they were here. Of the more consolidated names, I could point to Ronaldo, Modric or Alonso as huge success stories.

Bale is the only one that springs to mind for me really. Even the likes of Kaka was broken by the time he made it to RM

"All he does is win".
Zidane has hauled in his weight in silverware, and I reckon he doesn't give a ratsarse about whether or not anyone rates him. I think his players truly love the man. I respect that.

If la Liga is a weak league then what does that make the PL? A league where the title race virtually ended with still 3 months of the season left?

As with all coaches who win things with big clubs, people want to see how they cope with a smaller club or different league.

Why do people always bring up this nonsense to rate a footballer or manager

Beckham, Robben, Nistelrooy,

Beckham wasn't ruined at all; I think it's fair to say he reached his ceiling and did not really fit the system as well as he had at United. Nevertheless, he still did well and was well-liked by the fans because of his commitment and dedication. He was a pretty model pro for us.

Robben wasn't ruined in the least; he did very well at Madrid and continued to do brilliantly once he left.

Van Nistelrooy again, did very well for us despite arriving in the twilight of his career, so I don't think any of those cases apply.

All three were popular with the fans too, so I don't know how or why you think any of them would fit the theme.

I thought he was talking about players with success stories. His last fecking sentence.

And why say we and us, are you from Madrid or Spanish?

I think Zidane is hugely underrated as a manager simply because he's a great player during his days and most people believe great players don't make great managers which is absolutely wrong.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So, he's basically the la liga equivalent of Ole?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
really....?

Zidane world class player
Ole - decent player

Zidane manager of a team full of top stars in a two/three team league (won loads)

Ole inherited a stuttering Utd side from some Norwegian backwater & (won nothing)

not seeing it

Lol, my bad, sorry.

Yeah, both. Technically London-born, but Spanish (Madrid-born) parents and lived in Madrid from the age of 12 until my 30s.
