Standard of officiating

It’s terrible in the PL.

Look I’m bringing this up today because it affected United but it’s a problem for every team. I don’t think anyone is favoured by it but the standard is woeful.

I’m going to break it into 3 things I’ve noticed today and should be improved.

1. Why pick and choose when to call the ref over to the monitor? As the VAR ref either make your own mind up or call the ref over to look at everything that is reviewed. This picking and choosing does my head in tbh. Why get the ref to review the Telles foul (correct decision imo) and rule out the Soares handball? Total inconsistency.

2. Offsides. The lines apparently are thicker. If you have to look at an offside a few times it should not be offside imo. I personally thought both Ronaldo and Nkethia’s goals today should have stood. I also think Sterling’s goal a couple of weeks ago and Lukaku’s in the Carabao cup final should have stood.

3. Give the ref and VAR a microphone. Like Rugby if we could hear the ref we would at least be able to understand how they came to the decision.

Anyone just see the highlights on MOTD?
What BS editing was that. Alan shearer and Wright with some crap takes. They making out we got outplayed by Arsenal.
I mean come on…. So blatant with the Man Utd hate!

I don’t even watch MOTD anymore, they always miss really key moments in games if it doesn’t fit their agenda.

There’s a lot of logic behind wiring up the refs. A whole lot of logic. And also with interviewing the refs after the game. Would appease fans, create empathy, more respect for the referee, it is working in other sports, loads of good stuff.

So why wouldn’t they? Maybe to protect the ref’s identity? Nah, their mug is always being shown. Give them a stig mask if they want that.

So, what then? Seems to me, looking
outside of box for a minute, it's a control thing.

By making the lines very blurry, not just offside lines, but all this "clear and obvious" or "can only get involved for penalties and reds" BS is basically saying we now have a ref and his assistants AND a team of officials to hide behind.

Some of the decisions are inexplicable; the interviews would be hilarious with the ref getting tripped up every two minutes. Hence they don’t do them, IMO

It absolutely is a control thing. Wolves have no chance.

Mic’ if up the refs risks even more TV apologies for ‘any industrial language you may have heard’.

Any ex-pros would need trained in the laws of the game so that they come to the decision based on those laws and not on the cheating tricks that pros employ.

One review per manager? Either we want the correct decisions or not irrespective of how many need reviewing. Limiting it is intrinsically unfair.

There are error margins in the offsides and frame rate of the high speed cameras but they do their best with the tech. The WC is trialling the new auto and within mIlliseconds player tracking software - I imagine if successful it will be brought in the season after next.

OP

How would you rate our top 10 referees in order of merit..?

Who would you rate in other leagues

Just wondering..?

Agree with all 3 of those points made by the OP, especially number 2. VAR is farcical and intrusive and needs to take a backward step next season or after. Its spoiling the game and making referees half redundant to the game as VAR is MAKING the big decisions for them.

What If they send a letter of apology, will that help?

There are some valid points in the OP, but when it comes to fouls no amount of VAR is going to remove contention.

Players need to stop trying to cheat as much as they currently are. You can't cheat as much as some players do and then wonder why the ref doesn't give a legit foul against you.

all VAR has done is take decision making off an incompetent official on the pitch and given it to an incompetent official watching it on a telly. If your decision making is poor, it doesn't really matter how many angles you're watching it from, you're still an incompetent
