Death of a League

My view - rangers should go to third division. If it were any other club this would happen. Also gives rangers 3 years to get their finances in order and come back to the SPL a stronger force than they would be next season.

Also can you tell me when sky said they would terminate TV contract if rangers go to 3rd division. Here's a thought, maybe they will actually cover some games in the lower leagues now?

LMC - Doncaster himself has confirmed in print (direct quote) and on camera that the Sky deal - the new one starting in August specifies 4 OF games per season, as it always has.

And remember, that new deal has not yet been finally signed yet.

The TV deal doesn't actually give clubs that much more money. It benefitted two clubs much more than the rest.

Not saying it won't still hurt, but not as much as it'll hurt Celtic for instance.

And being utterly selfish, Dundee will come up which will help United out immensely.

So Rangers stay in the SPL as Newco but with for example points deduction & transfer ban & get relegated...........what happens to Sky contract??

Yeah davie, but that doesn't mean to say the contract can't be renegotiated, sky obviously wouldn't be wanting to pay as much but they haven't said they will pull the plug completely. How much does each club get anyway? 2 million or something? I know that is a helluva lot for the smaller clubs, but how many clubs that have been relegated have went bust due to lack of tv money, not very many. Every club needs to live within their means.

And as ivan points out, having dundee back in the league will generate more money for utd than having rangers in would. Rangers would also be able to compete in the scottish cup, which sky would continue to show.

I imagine Dunfermiline would be applying too

"Rangers would also be able to compete in the scottish cup, which sky would continue to show."

No guarantees that would be the case.

Beyond that, one of the broadcasters, be it Sky, ESPN or the BBC, or even STV would no doubt negotiate a deal with the SFL to start broadcasting their games, so money would be funneled into the lower leagues for a change.

Plus there are still a significant number of Celtic fans in the UK and beyond who would still want to watch their team on the telly, so someone would do a deal for the SPL.

Brum, my understanding is that once the fixtures are out, Dunfermline's membership of the SPL is terminated and they are replaced by Ross County.

Dundee (and someone else) applied for membership of the SPL back in March during the title run-in and that application is still on the table. Dunfermline on the contrary don't have an application and can't reapply until next season.

I think if rangers went to 3rd division then they would be allowed to play in cup, but yeah, no guarantees. This is why everyone making statements about no sky deal etc is too early to state aswell. I think the SPL clubs would actually be more determined to prove that they can live without rangers, no-one really knows how it will turn out.

Everyone is talking about the Sky deal but there are other issues to consider not least of all the 11-1 voting in SPL. With no Rangers , Celtic will lose all its power, the other 11 will gang up anf force through cjamges which will impact , finanacially, on Celtic. I think Rangers should go to the 3rd division as it's the way to appease the majority of supporters of other clubs who should be respected and give both Rangers and Scottish football the chance to regain some respect.

Agree completely meuandcoop.

Celtic i think are in a quandry about this - vote no to newco, fans will be pleased but we lose voting powers, but vote yes to Newco - PR nightmare. Fans are holding off renewing books until celtic declare what their stance is.

=============
Was there a date for the application?

How can you apply for it when at that point there were 12 members??

posted on 13/6/12

Brum - to get promoted to the SPL you have to have applied for membership. I believe that had to be done by the end of March/beginning of April. That way the SPL has time to make sure you fit the requirements of the SPL (stadia etc) and can confirm your membership at the AGM.

That application is to replace an existing member - the team that finishes bottom of the league (obviously Dunfermline) who has their membership terminated and they then are taken back into the SFL - I assume there is an application in place there too which is accepted at the SFL AGM.
