I'm gutted for him as this was it for him, as he won't be representing his country anymore. He had done a lot to help bring the Olympics to the country too so it would have been a great way of saying thank you.

What are everyone's thoughts on this?

seriously, beckham couldn't be any slower if he was in a wheelchair that had been clamped - i want to go into the tournament at least trying to win it, not doing a harlem globetrotters style exhibition team. We almost certainly won't, but we have to try ffs!

I think it's a joke tbh.

He did so much to bring the Olympics here.

The 35-year-old former England midfielder had made the final short-list and was widely expected to be confirmed in the 18-man party by coach Stuart Pearce.

I assume then that you also want Seb Coe, Sally Gunnell and Kelly Holmes competing in the athletics? they all had a huge hand in bringing the olympics to britain....

If you're not going to go out there to do the best you can, what is the point in entering?

I'm sure that Beckhams contribution to bringing the Olympics here was probably part of a plan to boost his image anyway, when did he last live here?!

Pearce is a mug, Beckham derserved to be in that squad.
1 last hurrah and he'll motivate the rest of lads, everybody loves Becks, and hes still capable(i think)

Good point. They should also have selected Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson as full backs and all the taxpayers who are bankrolling the Olympics should also have been selected.

He should have went as let's face it, they won't win it anyway so why not give him a wee run out.

There shouldn't be a Team GB football team anyway.

I'd have liked him in the squad, and he's been really keen.

I guess if you're picking a team to actually win it, which I guess you should then I suppose Richards is a better option (although I'd have picked Ferdinand if he wanted it)

Beckham shot himself in the foot when he signed for LA Galaxy, when other clubs like AC Milan and Spurs seemed interested.

Those that think this is a mickey mouse contest should ask the south americans.... They treat it with a great deal of importance and passion. Will be good to see how we compete.

I don't think anyone can call it a mickey mouse competition.

What they can call Mickey Mouse is the idea that any Team GB can actually compete.

Every other team that will be competing will have been preparing and building towards it for years, through their u17, u19 and u20 teams. Team GB will have had roughly a fortnights preparation.

And people on here seem to think Team GB will be able to compete and even get close to winning gold.

I personally feel it's disrespectful to Becks

This guy has done so much for english football and England in general in the past

he's probably the most famous englishman in the world and he's extremely patriotic.

I mean, it's not like he's any worse than Craig Bellamy now is it?!
