This guy has done so much for english football and England in general in the past
he's probably the most famous englishman in the world and he's extremely patriotic.

Do I even need to point out what's wrong with this statement?
I assume then that you also want Seb Coe, Sally Gunnell and Kelly Holmes competing in the athletics?
.........................
Just out of intrest have team GB ever produced any athletes of note since these Olympic greats?
I was in my late teens / early twenties during the Coe / Ovett years, they were great.

Doesnt change the fact hes the most famous britishman (word?) in the world
That's exactly what I'm insinuating
And it's Briton

brit. My bad
is there anywhere i can see the full squad yet?
Bellamy deserves it on ability, but I don't think he has the legs for a tournament. Too many matches too quickly.
Pearce has shit4brains, I liked him as a player but as a manager he's awful and the fact he hold important positions shows what's wrong with our football.
While I'm being a pedantic , can I just point out the fact that Team GB in itself is a terrible name given that it totally excludes Northern Ireland even though N.I. is very much a part of the Team.
seriously, beckham couldn't be any slower if he was in a wheelchair that had been clamped - i want to go into the tournament at least trying to win it, not doing a harlem globetrotters style exhibition team. We almost certainly won't, but we have to try ffs!
Well said mate.
Its a serious competition and only the best should go for it. Its not a Beckham farwell show.
We have more chance of winning gold in basketball than football

NI, is part of the UK, not Great Britain or Briton as you call it.
football shouldn't even be part of the Olympics, let the other events have all the limelight.
Boris, that was my point
And I didn't call Great Britain "Briton" either.

why? Football has just as much right to be in it as any other sport - some would argue as the world's most popular sport it has far more right than a lot of the minority ones.
The Olympics should be the pinnacle, most of the athletes aren't well known but the Olympics is what they look forward to and spend 4 years working towards for a bit of recognition. Football is about the World Cup, Euros etc. Olympics means F all in the context of football.
It's a pity Ryan Giggs wont have anyone in his own age group in the squad - He and Becks could have played dominos together after training or complained about the weather.

but a lot of sports see their own world championships as the pinnacle - not least cycling, rowing, gymnastics. it's only really "the big one" for athletics.
Zaphod - football should be in the Olympics. As an amateur event.
The Olympics is meant to be a non-professional event.

if that was the case, you'd have to kick out the pro's from every sport.
Will Giggs be the oldest Olympian this games?
gutted for Beckham.
can't stand Pearce feel as if he's trying to to make a name for himself by omitting Beckham.

I agree.
The likes of football and tennis are a wrong fit for the Olympics as the participants see a gold medal as a nice little bonus instead of the culmination of their sporting careers.
The Olympics is meant to be a non-professional event.
That idea evaporated years ago when they introduced tennis and basketball, all GB participants are now heavily subsidised and lead a very comfortable life on the proceeds.
