You ought to be quicker and more agile. Try playing panna to improve your skills, then nutmeg the lofty get.
I'm 5'6, and I was described as the short lad who runs round kicking people. So long as you tackle hard and leave the scene of your crime pleading your innocence or acting like you haven't done anything, you'll be fine.
Tall or short footballs the same, 80% is played in the head; when to pass, to shoot, to tackle and how quick you pass the ball.
I am ALWYAS on the move, darting left and right...when i get the ball, i move forward quickly pass then find space..its simple really.
I'm not much taller than you, but I've always been stocky - and over the past few years I've become *ahem* stockier
I'm 5'8, but pretty quick and agile. But as GB said, its all in the head. A good footballing brain will win over brute force 9/10 times.
I'm doing my best to get fitter but my primary sports are badminton and squash and it's a totally different fitness - so football completely destroys me.
I am going to start hitting the gym - I need to get a lot stronger.
Hey mate. I'm 5'4" n as a base rule I stick to my strengths against taller players.
Lower centre of gravity is ur friend so just increase ur agility so u can turn n twist quicker than the taller, bigger players. I'm also a bit stocky so can shrug some barging off sometimes. Other times I just turn n run off in another direction.
But yea, G_B is right, 80% football is played in the head.
low centre of gravity is a positive advantage when playing football !!
easier to dribble, turn sharply and accelerate..
being a messi or maradona size is very usueful on the football pitch for certain positions (not central defence obviously )
pekster
I was so useless up front today I ended up at centre back when my performance gradually got better because I have OK positional sense.
Trouble is the other guy in defence had no idea where to stand and just charged up the field so I just got left bare time and time again against two or three people.
You don't have to be big if you get your body in the right position to protect the ball.
Sure sometimes players will out-strength you, but good positioning can go a long way.
Get yourself in a position where the player has to go through you to get the ball, but you need to be brave.
Don't be afraid to give a bit back either. Big players know they can bully smaller players, but only if you let them.
Listen to BR, be on the turn when you recieve the ball, stay on your feet, know when to press and show lots of energy. That way your name won't be in the envelopes and hopefully you can batter the biguns. .
By the way there are some short @ rse's on here.

Just enjoy the game. You're playing at a level that really doesn't matter, beyond the enjoyment of playing the game, so things such as pressure, mentality, really don't mean jack. Been beaten to the ball? Being marked out of a game? Just brush yourself down and get on with it. And above all else, just enjoy it.
Be good at passing, they cant get anywhere near you if they cant get the ball off you
You're playing at a level that really doesn't matter,

How terribly sizeist is that comment.
I think a natural progression for any of you under 5'6" may well be a move to a Subbuteo league.

The treadmill doesn't work, I used to do 10k five days a week, and thought I was really fit, but was totally sha-gged after just 10 minutes of 5-a-side. I'm a lot fitter since I started doing cross country, but I'm forever picking up injuries, nursing a tendonitis at the mo.

True enough.
Similarly, I once rode the Alp d'huez stage of the Tour de France, in front of the telly on an exercise bike.
Next day I had to get off my real bike halfway up Everton valley, due to lack of breath.
Turned out I just needed a quick ciggy, and everything was fine from then on.
I was under the impression that short, intensity-oriented exercises were best for football fitness?
Jogging's okay, but as far as I know, pro football teams now concentrate on high-tempo, high-intensity work in training. Plenty of sprinting and three-quarters pace work.
I remember Steve Clarke bring asked who'd be the best Liverpool player to back in a marathon race and he said he wouldn't know, that training for football no longer involves long jogs.
You maybe right, running in a straight line is not the same as twisting and turning whilst sprinting. I'm no Mo Farah, but I'm fairly fit, but if I have to sprint suddenly I'm goosed after a mere 30 seconds, that's why I'm in awe of players like Bale, who can run at speed for 90 minutes (I know they don't run for the whole 90 minutes, but you know what I mean)
