its sad, but it doesnt keep it up at night with worry, anyone in his priveleged position who ends up like that has only themselves to blame

I think it is only natural to have sympathy for someone who is struggling and I hope that Gascoigne gets well as I think he has got a kind heart.

bottom line is alcoholism can be cured an overcome if you have the self discipline to do it -

fair play if he has other demons that we dont know about - maybe lack of understanding by myself of those demons to fully understand his problems --

Tbf.....privelage has nowt to do with addiction....

Loads of sympathy because he's a nice man who has suffering from loads of demons. While I shouldn't actually wish ill on anyone there are plenty of footballers I can think of who I wouldn't even bother reading about if they suffered the same

There are thousands of alcoholics in this country, many who weren't/aren't given the opportunity or help to beat their demons.
Why should an extremely privileged one be given any more sympathy than others.
Lovely character but absolutely no strength of mind.

Had a rough upbringing...then constantly told he was the best thing since wonderbras...then he made a fortune...Then he was surplus to requirements...

He's sad, not mad or bad.

the people i reserve sympathy for are soldiers injured in combat who get little to no help not millionaires who get more than enough help

If Gazza was joe ordinary footballer, we'd have no idea he had issues

I've got huge sympathy for the bloke. Money, fame, (transient) success doesn't come into it. In fact with Gazza I think those things only masked stuff he's long needed to deal with (with GOOD professional help) and actually probably made things worse (with all his hangers-on etc).

Just like Amy Winehouse.

I haven't read his biography and would be interested to know what he says his 'demons' are. But I'd bet my home that there is stuff that happened to him that he's never publicly admitted or talked about (just like Gary Speed imo). It's also VERY hard to find genuine people who can/will help - most of the professionals in this area are clueless, and if you're rich you're even more effed (imo) because you pay huge amounts of money for people who are in effect nothing more than blood-sucking vampires.

Lots more I could say, but apart from saying that there are huge numbers of accredited 'experts' in these areas...and most of them are useless, I have zero time for people saying 'what about sympathy for (people no-one's heard of)?'. Well, if we'd heard of them, we'd give them the same sympathy I hope (at least I would, and do so on a daily basis in places away from this website). But this is a football forum and THAT'S why this has come up. It's not friggin rocket surgery to work that out, is it?!

I pray Gazza gets well and that knowledge of his plight helps everyone in a similar position, whether a tramp or a billionaire. We are all human beings at the end of the day (and that's all we are)

Indeed Hector - I perhaps didn't phrase that well.

All I was trying to say is that we are all the same, despite money, fame, anything else.

Just for two examples, being torn apart by childhood trauma, or by PTSD as an adult, doesn't affect you any less because you have a load of cash in the bank...in many ways actually you are more vulnerable because there will be people looking desperately to cash in/hook onto you.

No sympathy at all.

People say money does not buy you everything well it means you do not have to worry about paying the bills, it also means you can pay for better care.

Not to mention the amount of fans and friends a person like Gazza would have amassed in his role within the public eye. They would all try to assist.

My mum passed away when she was 40 years old of a form of disease that was not curable neither brought on herself. To this day im still paying for things we did to get through her bucket list. Not to mention i had to still work everyday whilst caring for her.

It might sound cold hearted but i could not care anyless if gazza died tomorrow, he is not ill he has an addiction but he also has a choice.

There are people much more deserved of sympathy than him or amy winehouse.

He didn't leave the game with loads of money.

The most he earnt was 22k a week, his ex wife stripped him of the large majority of what he earnt.
