Arsenal have named Max Dowman in their Champions League squad.
The 15-year-old was selected as part of a 23-player List A squad on UEFA’s website.
Should he make his Champions League debut before turning 16 on December 31, he would become the first 15-year-old to appear in the competition.
UEFA confirmed to The Athletic last week that there are no age restrictions in its competitions.
The current youngest player to feature in the Champions League is Youssoufa Moukoko, who played for Borussia Dortmund aged 16 years and 18 days in 2020. If Dowman plays in any of Arsenal’s first six league phase matches, he will break that record.
Dowman was named alongside summer signings Viktor Gyokeres, Cristhian Mosquera, Piero Hincapie, Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Martin Zubimendi.
There was no place for Gabriel Jesus, who has been out since January with an ACL injury, but Kai Havertz, who recently underwent knee surgery, is included.
Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly were not named in the List A squad, but would qualify to be named in Arsenal’s List B squad.
Dowman, who made his Premier League debut last month, is not classified as “locally trained” due to not meeting UEFA’s criteria.
UEFA regulations state a “locally trained” player must been trained by their club (or a club in the same country) for at least three years between the ages of 15 and 21 to make List A. Or, for List B, be born on or after January 1, 2004, and have been eligible to play for the club for two years since turning 15.
Madueke is also not classified as “locally trained” by UEFA. The Athletic reported in July, shortly after his £48.5million ($62.3m) move from Chelsea, that Madueke had, however, been reclassified by the Premier League as “homegrown” because its rules differ from UEFA’s.
Madueke moved from Tottenham Hotspur to PSV in the Netherlands aged 16 in 2018 and joined Chelsea in January 2023, two months before his 21st birthday.
Arsenal were beaten in the Champions League semi-finals last season by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.
Arsenal kick off their Champions League campaign away to Athletic Club on September 16 in their first match of the league phase, which includes eight matches against different opponents, four home and four away.
Arsenal’s Champions League List A squad:
Goalkeepers: David Raya, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Tommy Setford
Defenders: William Saliba, Cristhian Mosquera, Ben White, Piero Hincapie, Gabriel, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori
Midfielders: Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze, Christian Norgaard, Leandro Trossard, Noni Madueke, Mikel Merino, Kai Havertz, Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice, Max Dowman
Forwards: Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Viktor Gyokeres
Arsenal’s Champions League fixtures:
(All times BST/GMT)
Athletic Club vs Arsenal — September 16, 5.45pm
Arsenal vs Olympiacos — October 1, 8pm
Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid — October 21, 8pm
Slava Prague vs Arsenal — November 4, 5.45pm
Arsenal vs Bayern Munich — November 26, 8pm

Dowman could make history
Analysis by James McNicholas
Arsenal will be able to field all eight of their major summer signings in this season’s Champions League.
In order to facilitate that, academy products like Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly have been named on List B.
By a quirk of the rules, Max Dowman does not qualify for List B, so he has been selected on List A. If he figures for Arsenal in any of their group stage games before the turn of the year, he will become the youngest player in Champions League history.
Arsenal have also selected Kai Havertz in List A, a clear sign of their faith that the striker’s return is not too far away. Gabriel Jesus, however, misses out.

I hope Havertz will be back Dec/Jan. But it is a surgery. You can never be sure if he will recover quickly. Jesus was supposed to be back in training. Maybe they feel he can't play 2 games in a week?

Arsenal have also selected Kai Havertz in List A, a clear sign of their faith that the striker’s return is not too far away. Gabriel Jesus, however, misses out.
That's also a good sign.

It was a surgery but a small invasive surgery in contrast to an open surgery.
