Apparently we in for this chap..nit heard of him to bw honest

Oh well, at least we forced Chelsea to use a large percentage of the money they got for a fantastic player in Mata, to bring in a potentially good player in Salah.

Jlou problem is they can waste money away whereas for us it would be a big gamble

His price only went up as a result of a bidding war. On the first of Jan he was available for much much less.

If you truly think other teams would not of been made aware of any bids, regardless of when Liverpool made them, then I'm afraid you're being extremely naive....

"Liverpool are unlikely to sign anyone else on the rebound in January."

If the rest of the story is true, is this true too?

Did we not secure deals for Borini, Studge and Coutinho without any other team bidding?

Before the Mata deal none of the big clubs were looking for a wide forward other than Zenit but the player wanted to play in the prem.

As soon as Basle new Chelsea were sniffing the price went up.

"Did we not secure deals for Borini, Studge and Coutinho without any other team bidding?"

Chelsea got rid of 2 of those 3.
Which is a little different to them hijacking our deals.

Way too slow closing deals. Been the case for a while now.

Kash. Or maybe it was simply a case of no one else being interested at the prices we were paying? Borini and Coutinho certainly couldn't be classed as 'sought after', and Sturridge also drew his fair share of criticism for not settling at various big clubs.

Salah already has shown he can perform in the CL, so Basel will want the highest possible price, thus why it would be more difficult keeping this one under wraps....

To me it seems pretty simple, when Chelsea get rid of a playe and are no longer interested in them, we're first in the queue to snap them up.

When both Chelsea and Liverpool want a player, the player holds out for Chelsea.

Which is very understandable considering the state of each club.

But you say this as if you have in depth knowledge of these deals. You don't, but choose to believe it because as usual, it suits your brow beating of the owners....

Obviously this is not the case as Chelsea had to outbid us.

If Mohammed Salah wanted Chelsea and Chelsea only, he would have stated it as such...

The fact Chelsea had to outbid us, to try and sign the player, shows that he wasn't angling for a move to Chelsea instead of us, in fact the opposite is probably true and Liverpool are still a major major draw for players.

posted on 26/1/14

hmm, not sure I agree there

We're still a major draw but it's not for the players who have interest from the big CL and title favourite clubs. We lose that battle every time repeatedly. Without fail. And it doesn't seem to me to be because we don't bid high enough or move slowly.

We get the leftovers in our current state. Still good players mind but we're not getting linked to Mata and Hazard types for good reason and even the tier one down from that we lose out every time.

posted on 26/1/14

Well it's different to say the hazard transfer.

He had the choice of man utd or Chelsea and he chose Chelsea.

In this case, it seems as though Basel and Chelsea want to make his mind up for him.

Wonder if he still wants a move to Liverpool?!

Term

We know many of the details. Mourinho himself said that they had no intention of selling Mata at the start of the transfer window. He also said that the Salah deal was something that has been put together at short notice.

Brendan has already admitted Salah was a player he wanted to bring in. A decent bid would have done the job at the start of the month. Acting quickly before these Mata events occured.

How many more details do you need exactly?

posted on 26/1/14

The idea we could have got Salah in the first week of the window is a myth.

We managed that with Sturridge and Coutinho because they were surplus, and in the case of Sturridge we had done the ground work in the August window.

Basle were not seeking to sell Salah, so understandably they wanted him as long as possible and for us much as possible.

Also by all accounts Chelsea had asked to be kept informed as to his status, so if we had bid £20m on January 2nd, they just would have come in with the same at the same time, or more.

The only way we had any chance of beating Chelsea to the player was if the player actively said he wasn't interested in Chelsea. The chance of that happening was pretty low.

Once the window has closed, if we haven't signed an alternative, then fair enough you could question why we spent so long on Salah (seemingly), but criticising now is just needlessly negative and ignores the likely outcomes.
