Italy- Buffon, Bergomi, Baresi, Maldini, Fachetti, Pirlo, Tardelli, Rivera, Baggio, Meazza, Piola
Brazil- Gilmar, Carlos Alberto, Domingos Da Goia, Lucio, Nilton Santos, Didi, Zico, Pele, Garrincha, Ronaldo, Rivelino
Brazils 2nd XI is probably as good if not better than any other teams best XI
Don't disagree with that. I love Rossi & Baggio personally but included the subs bench to give some appreciation to Meazza & Piola, and i see they're in your staring line-up. Don't like it when people forget about the pre-war era or think that those players don't count as much...
No room for Valentino Mazzola in the Italy squad?
He'd be on my subs bench if had one TGM, what a team that Torino side was
Although he never played in a World Cup, so doesn't really come into this discussion I suppose
He was only capped for Italy 12 times so.....no chance. I realise that was because a) the war and b) his death...and 12 times is not a reflection on his ability...but still, he can't unseat those in the squad based on what might have been...
Mex,
That would be quite a tasty substitution to bring on! Suppose playing in the same areas as Roberto Baggio, probably Italy's greatest ever footballer, doesn't help his cause in such an exercise.
What a team indeed. Crying shame.
Fair enough. Didn't take into account that he didn't star at a World Cup.
Although that Torino side made up a fair chunk of the Italy squad I think.
Shearer has to be in & around an England squad as well for me. One of our very few world class performers in the past 20 years.
TGM, yeah up against Baggio in my side, and Bobby is one of my all time favourite players, every bit as good as Maradona for me, if that penalty had gone in, in 1994 and Italy had won the WC everyone would think the same aswell
Buffon, Maldini, Baresi, Cannavaro, Zambrotta, Pirlo, Tardelli, Rivera, Riva, Rossi, Baggio (Subs Zoff, Bergomi, De Rossi, Del Piero, Altobelli, Meazza, Piola)
Altobelli is an an annogram for Balotelli
Mex,
I seem to remember your love of Baggio in other threads, that's why I stuck it in
Possibly so, that 94 World Cup was one of the greatest individual performances by Baggio, so cruel.
Maradona was on a level of his own for me! That Belgium game in 86, never seen anything like it.
Never watched the whole 90 minutes of Arg vs Bel in 86, only seen the goals
When I say individual performances I meant the tournament as a whole. He dominated it.
Like a Garrincha, Maradona or Platini in 84.
if that penalty had gone in, in 1994 and Italy had won the WC everyone would think the same aswell
---------------
if that penalty had gone in....... ...Brazil would STILL have won by scoring THEIR next kick. Which is why i get really angry and the way people talk about that penalty as if its Baggio's legacy because it's not. You can probably tell he's one of my favourite ever players too.
Unfortunately, people in Britain seem to love remembering failures as much as glories which is maybe why England have the worst record on penalties of every single country in FIFA and Scotland have found a multitude of ways to not qualify from the Group Stages, whilst Wales produce world class players every generation and still somehow never get anywhere...
TGM
Agreed, Baggio in 94 and Maradona in 86 are too most stand-out examples of one player carrying a team to a final...

I think I'm right in saying that Italy once put out a team with all the Torino players except for the goalkeeper. They were a phenomenal team by all accounts.
Where are the other 28 teams?
try looking up Podolski's record for Germany...
