Trying to comprehend why some feel England’s failings over the last (circa 50) number of years can solely be attributed to the manager and the tactics they have employed.
Cappello? Just one example of a manager who has a CV most others would die for yet when in charge of England failed to deliver.
Suggest the "failings" lie elsewhere as England have had some top quality managers (especially in the last 20yrs).

Exactly. There must be other underlying causes.
I don't think Roy covered himself in glory but it simply cannot be the fault of every manager that England fail.
To be fair, I reckon our issues with player selection and deployment extends further than the manager. The media plays a huge role in hyping up our so-called "superstars" essentially making them undroppable. That was plain to see with the whole "Gerrard-Lampard" debate of the last decade.
I've seen a lot of reasons bandied about but we really do have good enough players to do better than we have done. Of course we can improve grassroots football or encourage more players to ply their trade abroad but in reality most of our issues are on the pitch when we're at these major tournaments. I think this world cup has really shown that given the right system even average players can beat top sides. Equally, in a system employing the wrong players (Spain), top players can be made to look very poor.
England faiped due to players who did so well in the 38 league games not being able to transfer this to the ibternational stage.
We need a cocky, confident manager who projects their attitude on the team.
Hodgeson, Capello, McClaren, and Erikssen are all pretty tame characters who don't have much of a personality when the going gets tough. And it really shows in the team.
I'm sure a coach like Mourinho, LVG, Simeone, or Klopp would work wonders with the England team. The team seems a little clueless without a respectable, intimidating leader to get behind
I completely disagree. The difference between the Premiership and every other top league in the world is all of our clubs play a different formation and style of football.
This is because we have coaches from all over the world playing a different style which means that when our players join the England squad they're being asked to play a different position and a different style.
Ligue 1 is predominantly French, La Liga is predominantly Spanish, Serie A is predominantly Italian and the Bundesliga is predominantly German and they're all used to paying the same style and positions for club and country.
The fact that our young players get loaned out and never play Champions League football also means we lack the mental ability and quality to cope at the highest level.
I don't think it's a coincidence that we've gradual at been getting worse since the introduction of the Premiership! I blame Wenger for replacing a team full of England internationals to French and then everyone but English.
