Did he fail at the "basics" when he scored a volley from near the halfway line last season?
People just love to knock Rooney. I thought he was one of our better outfield players last season. Seemed like one of the only players who actually looked arssssed.
DDG was POTY, and rightly so, but Rooney was probably next best.
Even giroud had a better season that Rooney. And people call him the donkey!
been saying this for years. If he was from the Faroe Islands we'd be slating him at every chance we got.

Like I said flashes or brilliance now and then, his output covers up his dreadful performances. I can't even remember the last time he was the stand out player in a match..
I don't over support him, I just find these sort of plank articles are ridiculous....
Rooney was better than RVP, last season... Falcao has yet to play... Di maria has played 70 minutes...
Yet a PL machine who will break every UTD record as a striker is finished because "he doesn't even do the basics".
Its pure Muppetry
He was better than RVP but lets not forget that RVP managed to only start less than half the PL games that season through injury.

Rooney was better than RvP because RvP was injured most the season. RvP's goal to game ratio was higher. And if Rooney was that good why did Fergie in his last season keep on sacrificing Rooney's position and play him in midfield and let RvP be the main man upfront? He knew exactly who the better forward was/is.
he can't even grasp the basics of football

like you can, you mean. This is Rooney you are 5hitting on not the fat kid in the school yard with his PE note who got picked last. Am I to reply to this with some kind of considered argument.
I despair with the t-wats that post on this forum
Can't believe you are still having a go at Rooney after he smashed Norway single handedly and proved all the doubters wrong.
He's a marketers dream, TUX.

Due to a stupid audience I guess.
Barry when your clan votes yes this month will you need a passport to post on this British website.
Whether it is or not it explains why he gets paid so much.
Would you consider it an insult if Rooney overtook Charlton's records for United and England?
Speaking for England, it would be embarrassing to see him average his way to the record.

Charlton played in midfield for England and United. Put that in perspective and realise that Rooney is light years behind SBC like all England other CForwards who have played for England or United

Were Germany embarrassed when Klose took the WC record and national record?
Let's not be silly.
I was a leading vanguard for the 'Rooney decline' for years and i am still a noted critic when need be.
But i have accepted Rooney is going nowhere, support him when needed and quit with the endless whining of some our fans about Rooney on a daily basis: it is idiotic, counter-productive and very petulant.
Rooney scores good looking goals sometimes. That ends up covering his actual performances which are imo anonymous on the whole. He's gna break goal scoring records no doubt but that doesn't take away from the fact the majority of the time in games, he has stinkers but does end up coming away with a goal or two. I don't think he knows his own role for the team either. Both for utd and England
Errrrr Sturridge was good first half but reverted to type second
Rooney was meh. Not poor but not good. Let's not retire him after his first game as captain though eh?
Wilshere is getting better and jones is rapidly improving
Sterling was fantastic though and I thought Herndo had a good game too
Sturridge frustrates the fak out of me though. He could be so much better
If Rooney breaks it then he deserves it like any player who breaks a record. I think though most top scorers for countries are recent players simply because players today play more. 5 of England's top 10 capped players have played for England over the past 5 years.
TRC
Mr C, that's true. It's something I've been saying for a while. His overall influence in games has declined and he's become a lot more inconsistent - despite improving statistically.

Charlton was considered a forward
Back then, formations were very different
If Rooney was going to lose his place in the team this season then we really needed to bring in a quality number 10, even last January maybe so they had time to settle, and another quality player that could play attacking mid in the summer, and even a quality striker in the summer, but we failed to do that, coupled with Rooney's brilliant performances at the world cup and so far this season, there is no reason why Rooney should lose his place in the team.
Yeah Darren
Anyway I'm gna go before macca reads my post
For me Lineker was England's best ever striker. Hey scored goals against the biggest sides and in the biggest games.
Had Owen stayed fit I feel he would have gotten the record.
And Jimmy Greaves was also a legendary striker. Circumstance stopped him getting more goals than Sir Bobby.
As an outsider looking in, Rooney has been poor for a while now. The older he got and lost agility and pace I expected him to start influencing games more via passing and greater attacking efficiency but he really doesn't control affairs.
Tbh at times in earlier years it was the rest of England's XI that weren't in sync with him (a European no10 with cloggers in midfield) but now these sharp paces forwards are being held back by him.
He was such a classy player that wasn't defined by his English grit or willingness but real quality I don't see that now
I high fived Jimmy Greaves once, tiny bloke.
