There were two shots on target all match according to the DM match report. One of them was from Rooney.
I can assume the rest of the players were not up to much either.

Seems strange arguing on a game you didn't watch?
Rooney was poor, the other attacking players were better.

Is there something wrong with criticising a player that hasn't played well?
You don't have to agree with people but it's fair for someone to voice their concerns on a player not performing isn't it?
I think he comes in for higher scrutiny because of the fact he is our captain and the highest player not only for United but in the entire PL. Some probably just want some sort of justification, that's all.
Some people may go over the top with their criticism of Rooney but there seems to be an equal amount of over support for him too, he definitely polarising opinion.

Spot on.
The thing that has bothered me so much about Roo is how reliant the club has been on him for so long which is why I am glad we have brought in world class attacking talent this summer. Roo is still a good player (though nowhere near as good as some claim) but he is not good enough for a club like United to be so reliant on him! Frankly, that just illustrates how poor we have been.
I must also say that it grates on my nerves that Roo is the club's "poster boy" - and for the same reason, i.e. he really is not that good - as it puts him out there to be judged, so to speak. You can't help but ask yourself (and others) does he deserve the hype? It's similar to the Beckham situation, if your face is on everything then you are in the spotlight and will be judged accordingly.
People have all had plenty to say about Falcao's reported wages (which I do not believe for one second are £350k pr week) and yet he has not even kicked a ball for us. So is it not justified to criticise our longstanding highest earner (and poster boy) when he is playing so poorly? Particularly when we now have 2 or 3 other top class players who can play in his position?
Captain or not, Roo will be dropped if the likes of RVP, ADM, Mata and Falcao all stay fit and play better than him. Maybe this summer of spending will actually spur him on and force him to raise his game? If so then it could be a springboard for him, if not he will get left behind.
It is worth noting that he was our second best player last season though that is almost like being damned with faint praise! My point is that we may see more of the old (young) Rooney with world class players around him. Otherwise he might suddenly find that he is not the main man in every advert on MUTV anymore.
yet people will defend duffers like Ando on here before they will Rooney.

Charlton was considered a forward

no he wasnt, Ask him. I have, and he played in midfield as far as he was concerned.

In the poll of all time best players on United's website, Charlton was in the forwards category
Tactics and formations were different back then but yes, in today's game, he would be considered a midfielder

I have no issue with criticism of Wazza if it is warranted.
Just out of interest how many shots on target did this link up play between Sturridge and Sterling produce.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This
Fancy play is all well and good but you still need goals
What gets me with Wazza is the national outcry everytime he isn't man of the match
Rooney is not and never will be Ronaldo. Why will fans never understand that
He played ok last night. Not great but certainly not 'attrocious' as I have heard since the game
If Rooney left and the England team carried on poorly, trust me, the papers will be looking for another victim
Am I seeing things or has this morning's Sun newspaper called wazza Wayne Maca Rooney'?

There is a separate thread about Sterling on here ewhere people are praising him
As for your comment about Sterling and Sturridge having a great game. Sterling did, Stuuridge had a good first half but second half he reverted to type
He's our centre forward. i don't remember him scoring or creating any chances
You say the game isn't about states. Of course it bloody is. You don't get victories if you play brilliantly and don't score.
I tell ya, the overreaction to Wazza'a first game as captain with a young side, in a friendly is absolutely insane.
I pity the next guy the media and fans start to target
Rooney is not finished but I think his best days are behind him which is sad. That game yesterday clearly demonstrated how clueless our manager is and how he is the man responsible for a lot of our failures.
We had the following players on the pitch in attack yesterday; Sterling, Sturridge, Rooney, Oxlade. All of them are quick, Rooney not as quick but still quick and we were playing a slow patient passing game giving their defence time to set things up.
Most of those guys would struggle to play in the championship but they managed to keep us quiet. Hodgson is out of his depth
Wilshere is getting better

Macca, I know which is why I avoided that poll.
During the 60s we predominantly had Dennis Law with either the likes of David Herd and Brian Kidd up front.
As with England in 66 with Geoff Hurst and Roger Hunt. Charlton played behind these two like a central attacking midfielder

I know mate
All I said was he was considered a forward back then due the the way the formation was
The midfield surely was considered to be the left half, the centre half and the right half back then with the forward line of the RW IR CF IL and LW
I only remember footie from the mid 70s anyway being born in 65 tbf so could be completely wrong
Obviously in todays game, he would be considered an attacking midfielder
What a lot of BS...It' sbash Rooney time again, he ain't scored a hattrick for ages now. Time to let him got and shutup all the no-nothing critics!

The same article written by Robb? The one where he starts it by saying " it pains me to say it." Rooney was atrocious, get over it. Had he been the one doing what sterling and Sturridge did, you will be showering him with praises. I stand by my claim, stats can be misleading, used by you most of the time here to hide the fact that Rooney has been shocking. Well newsflash, statistically Hernandez even Berbatov are/were always better than Welbs, the greatest manager in the game saw past that and created a partnership with welbs and Rooney. If you can't understand that, then good luck with your Rooney poster in your bedroom.
