Just as a disclaimer to my final sentence:

I have read the book and I don't believe any of it, the author is quite clearly a crackpot and has drawn on natural and historical "uncertainties" as the basis of his book, and offering ludicrous reasons as to why such things have occurred. However, the general principle is an interesting concept (although again, one I disbelieve).

The study in matter here is key though. Working out how to understand and maybe one day being able to manipulate dark and or/ exotic matter could one day allow us to create wormholes and cheat time and space.

I agree this is unlikely to be in our lifetime but there are scientists who think it one day possible. Mankind is waiting for the next leap in intelligence. That Eureka moment. When it comes I think we'll be a step closer to understanding what matter can really do.

And no, haven't read it.

I think you'd enjoy it

Yeah, I agree the study of dark matter is key. But to date dark matter is pure speculation, there is no actual evidence of its existence. Sure, it would fill some gaps and would be very convenient to a lot of theories but until it's existence is proven it is speculation.

You telling me this isn't real?!

Can someone explain, in Lehman's terms, what dark matter is. Oh and keep up the debate

(cue Dunc's "Shinji likes to mass debate in the morning joke)

Dark matter is a theory that says everything "in between" the normal matter in space is actually matter itself. So, all of the emptiness is actually a "repulsive force" which is what is actually causing the Universe to expand at an increasing rate. Essentially, scientists can't work out why since the Big Bang the rate of expansion in the Universe is actually increasing, as opposed to slowing down as you'd expect. The phenomenon is put down to "dark matter" or "dark energy" as a convenience, but its existence has not yet been proven. Essentially because it is "nothingness".

I apologise if there are any inaccuracies (bit gay but) I'm testing myself, by answering without looking it up first...

Here's a link for a proper description: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_matter

Feck me I prefer your version (bit gay or not). The wiki link has too many words I don't understand.

Hence me asking on here. Cheers

I didn't want to mislead you, but wanted to attempt explaining it without looking up first to test myself which might be a bit gay but whatever.

Anywho, I think it was near as dammit anyway.

Another book recommendation, which has proper description of dark matter (as well as a lot of cosmology and other interesting scientific phenomena) is 'Nothing' http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nothing-absolute-oblivion-insights-nothingness/dp/1846685184.

It's a collection of essays from the New Scientist journal on the subject of 'Nothing' - some of the stuff is proper mental.

Sorry if I'm turning you into a bookworm Shinj! Try not to read some of this stuff after "doing the gardening", you would most probably pass out from trying to understand

VIK you should start "p.o.r.n of the day" with Lord V.I.K

You've already got your first two instalments pre-written

I never really understood, or had a grip of, how incredible it is until about 3 years ago - since then I've been obsessed.
