Films per decade in my latest top 200
1910s 1
1920s 13
1930s 12
1940s 19
1950s 26
1960s 33
1970s 25
1980s 22
1990s 22
2000s 8
2010s 17
2020s 2
I dig the 90s way more than I did before.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
2000’s didn’t do so well in your list. I’m curious seeing you go back to 1900’s have you watched that controversial film birth of a nation, that’s rightly panned for its racism, but praised for its film accomplishments?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah I go right back to like 1900.
I'll be honest, I haven't watched many feature films made before 1923 in full though.
I'm familiar with D.W. Griffiths's stuff, having part watched the following:
A Corner in Wheat (1908 I think)
Birth of a Nation (1915)
Intolerance (1916)
Broken Blossoms (1919)
Way Down East (1920)
but I couldn't be assed yet to watch any of them from start to finish.
It was really him and a French guy called Abel Gance who were really advancing film during the 1910s.
Gance's most famous film is Napoleon (1927) which I have actually watched almost all 5 hours of, but his 1919 J'Accuse was a bit of a technical marvel for the day too, and has some really very impressive images.
There was another French guy called Tourneur who did some neat stuff.
The full list of pre 1925 films I have on my longer list (about 350) of the best films is:
The Flying Train 1902 Germany
The Great Train Robbery 1903 USA Edwin S Porter
Dante's Inferno 1911 Italy Francesco Bertolini
The Birth of a Nation 1915 USA DW Griffith
Intolerance 1916 USA DW Griffith
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea 1916 USA Stuart Paton
The Blue Bird 1918 France Maurice Tourneur
J'Accuse 1919 France Abel Gance
Way Down East 1920 USA DW Griffith
The Mark of Zorro 1920 USA Fred Niblo
The Phantom Carriage 1921 Sweden Victor Sjöström
Dr Mabuse the Gambler 1922 Germany Fritz Lang
Nosferatu 1922 Germany FW Murnau
The Toll of the Sea 1922 USA Chester M. Franklin
Die Nibelungen 1924 Germany Fritz Lang
The Great White Silence (doc) 1924 UK Herbery Ponting
Sherlock Jr 1924 USA Charlie Chaplin
The Thief of Bagdad 1924 USA Raoul Walsh
Most if not all of these films are free to view on youtube.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Watching films that old is not really my thing, but I was curious to see what you thought. Out of wondering if you had to pick one film from 1900-1945 and also one from 1945-now, could you pick them?
Talking of films I’m watching bad boys ride or die, now 30 mins in I know this will be an utter bag of shiiiit. I knew this before I started, but still. The fact this and the FF series made money just makes me believe that the human race is getting really, really stupid

That country man, honestly…
those are such huge periods.
1925-1944 there are so many great films.
But in terms of talkies, I would have a clear pick yes:
Day of Wrath 1943 Denmark Carl Theodor Dreyer
There are also some really great silent films as well though.
For 1945-2024, I could pick 1 silent film which would be La Jette (1962). Well, it's narrated, but other than that is silent.
For a talking film, I would have to give 20 or maybe 10, but 1 is tough. There are so many that I love, and to an extent it would vary depending on who I was recommending too.

Bad boys 4 or 5 or whatever this abortion is, is retard3d. Shouldn’t even had made 1, never mind this many
it's not much tougher!
it's just 1 instead of 2!
OK, so I'll say Late Spring 1949 was quite good.
