I think that romance was the most emotive bit of the film tbh. Rest was a bit dull.

Saladin was pretty famous for being the enemy the crusaders greatly respected

Balian being the bland 'hero's journey' figure means they can't tell the actual political story. Fair enough thats typical Hollywood

As someone who quite liked Kingdom of Heaven after watching it a few times (didn't like it much on my first viewing) I'm definitely intrigued by this Director's cut and where I can get my hands on it.
