How would our 97-99 team fare?

No team comes close to the 04-05 team IMO, can't believe last seasons team was being compared.

Btw this is in no way to either take away from utds treble team and also no slight against our title winning teams as our team from 04-08 was probably the best along with barcelona, and we all know about how we got cheated in europe against liverpool and barcelona.

Oh to have Eidur and Jimmy leading our line now

not in total package, that team was unstoppable. But want peoples views on how our 98-99 team would do!

Not as well as you seem to think, to be honest.

Probably finish 4th at best, if they replaced the current Chelsea team of course.

Your best player at that time was Zola, but he wasn't ever considered a world class player - for example, he never made an impact at international level.

The current City, Arsenal, United & Chelsea squads are much deeper and have more elite players by a long shot.

Didn't Chelsea finish 6th in 97? They weren't even that good during that time.

Battle for top four.

zola never made an impact at international level but still scored against england ok.

I dont think i'd have any current arsenal player in the chelsea squad then tbh bar sanchez

di matteo,poyet, wise,zola,vialli,casiraghi,flo(hughes for a bit)...

more 98-99 but don't think you understand my question, I said how would they fare now, when teams imo(especially utd and arsenals) are much worse then they were late 90s

It's a fair point, though. Zola never scored in an international tournament and his biggest impact for Italy was that winner in the qualifiers.

Zola's impact at international level wasn't very good, he was better at club level. Unsurprisingly when you look at the attacking options Italy had back then that a player of Zola's talents wasn't good enough for them.

The 1998-99 team didn't have nearly enough goals in them. Zola was leading scorer with 15 goals in all competitions. He was an aesthetically amazing player but I think some people overrate how impactful he was. I would say they'd be a top 4ish team but not challenge for the title. Miles off Man City.

so our team then would of been(just choosing arsenal) against arsenal team:

de goey < cech
Petrescu/ferrer > whoever arsenal have
Desailly > koscielny
Lebeouf > mertesacker
babyaro/le saux > monreal?
wise > ramsey
di matteo - carzola
Poyet > wilshere/ozil
goldbaek - ozil
Vialli > giroud
casiraghi < sanchez

That's very fair and balanced

Apart from Zola, none of those players you've listed would even make the current Arsenal bench.

Even Zola, top player, but look at what he achieved in football and compare it what Ozil has achieved.

thats the main reason though darren, look at who else they had, there never going to play a 30 year old(Who plays in england) over the italians playing in serie A

I hate that I used the word "impactful" after seeing how many others have used it in the last few replies.

Again, read the article, poyet and casiraghi were injured. Our probably two main goalscorers would of been them that season. We also spread goals around that team and the league is worse nowadays

shut up, if I could be bothered I'd delete your wumming liquid! no wonder people take the mick outta you boyo

The other reason is that he didn't impress enough when he did play, even before he was in his 30's.

Besides, doesn't alter the fact that he had limited impact at international level. Which was the point #LiquidDeluded made.

so liquid chelsea finished a point or so behind the gooners that year, who would you have from this arsenal team over the 98 one?

wise achieved alot more than ramsey ever has and was a leader, and overtly underrated because he was an ass hole

Dennis couldn't even get into the England team.

Mon now lad, I liked that Chelsea team a lot.
Poyet, Vialli, Desailly, fanatstic players.
But be honest, do you REALLY think Dennis Wise was a better footballer than Aaron Ramsey? Do you REALLY think LeBoeuf was better than Mertesacker? Goldbaek? Come on, let's be honest about it.

And as much as I loved Vialli - he scored 20 league goals in 3 seasons. Giroud has 41 in his 1st 3 seasons.

Football has not regress technically at all. That's just nostalgia speaking. Majority of replays I watch from the 90's are plodding, clog-fests. There are more technicians in the current English game.
