But Ozil's a better player than Overmars imo.

Agreed.

But can you compare a winger to a CM - it's like saying Fabregas is better than Hazard

You were 12 when Overmars wore an Arsenal shirt.

Not for Arsenal he isn't.

Ozil wouldn't play ahead of Bergkamp so he has no place in the team.

Overmars would walk into Arsenal's right wing as it stands.

Sideshow

He has plays a part in every goal that Arsenal score.
Not even Zola could do that!

"Ozil wouldn't play ahead of Bergkamp so he has no place in the team."

Wenger wouldn't bench Ozil - he's too good to leave out.

But he'd have to consistently play well, otherwise Overmars or Ljungberg would take his spot.

I thought we were talking about the players being good enough to get in the side based on how good they were for Arsenal not Wenger lacking the bottle to drop underperforming players as they are favourites/big names.

There was no talking, just drunken ramblings.

At one point Dennis Wise was better than Aaron Ramsey!

I meant Liquid's.

It doesn't mean that much anyway. Just because Chelsea were close to Arsenal that season, and United, doesn't mean many of their players would have started for those teams at the time.

It's a tricky comparison, but Ozil has actually played on the wing a fair amount in his career.

He became a World Champion playing 5 of the 7 games on the left wing.

He won the German Cup (scored winner in the final) & the Euro U21 title (Man of the Match in the final) as a left-winger.

Liquid

Overmars although utterly brilliant operating with Cashley only moved six inches off the touch line - except when he was cutting into shoot and score.

Ozil was never a winger in the Giggs sense of the word.

Did Cashley even play a match with Overmars?

To be fair, the older of us will remember Casiraghi - a very good player and all round forward. But Wise, a very good captain and inspirational player was not in the same league as any of the current (or past) Arsenal midfielders - but he was a very different type of player of course.

LeBoeuf was a good ball playing defender and as good as Mertersacker but no better. Babayaro was a terrible player. And while I may not like Ozil (lacks physical presence and stamina) Goldbaek wasn't even the best footballer in his house.

Some people need to understand balance in opinion and not blind support for their clubs.

Dennis Wise was basically Lee Cattermole.

Do you REALLY think LeBoeuf was better than Mertesacker?

----------------------------------------------------------

Can't believe I've actually read that!

How Meresaker gets in a German team is beyond me - awful defender, awful footballer!

Much as I love late 90s Chelsea, it wasn't a patch on the teams of 04/05, 09/10 or even last years. Our team back then was essentially a collection of terrible but hardworking non-internationals, a bunch of internationals for 2nd rate countries, a sprinkling of decorated but past their prime internationals, and the legend known as Zola. Frankly it astounds me that we managed to go through 98/99 with only 3 defeats especially factoring in how competitive the league was back then.

Late 90s Chelsea was magical to me as a kid. But lets be realistic here, good functional team but not one you'd entertain winning the league today.

OP
Your 99 side was a very entertaining and didn't park the bus and play negative boring either I had a lot of respect for chelsea back then unlike this Boring lot of today.
