Tony Romo: Can he lead Dallas to the SB?

Massively improved?

The offense hasn't moved forward at all for years. If anything, given the age of Witten now and the fact that Romo is now injury prone at his age then I can't see how the team who finished bottom of the worst division in football will suddenly be a contender

The massively improved comment was a direct quote, Mick. Not an opinion of mine.

I'm firmly in agreement with you. I think they're pinning their hopes on the optimistic assumption that Romo will emulate his form in 2014, and placing too much expectation on Zeki.

That being said, any offense forced to rotate 4 QBs as they did last season would have struggled. It certainly wasn't a fair representation of their offensive capabilities, and I think that's where the "massively improved offense" bit comes in. There's no doubt that a fully fit Romo massively improves them. There's just doubt about him staying fully fit!

Sorry I wasn't accusing you of saying that.

My incredulity is aimed at the original report.

Sorry, I mistook your comment!

It's all well and good lauding their offense, but let's face it that's all they've got. I think it's very premature for people to start ripping them getting to the SB. If they get to the post season they'll have done well given their frailties on defense.

I know Romo was a big miss for them last season, but let's face it it's not like they lost Jordy Nelson...

Tipping, not ripping...

No chance.

Defense has been overhyped and un-justifiably lauded for a few years now. Offensive line has a few powerful weapons, but in general it's not strong enough to lead them to the SB.

Then, like you said, we're assuming Romo stays healthy, which I cant see.

Not feeling it at all.

I don't follow it much in the off season. Who's looking good/bad?

Philly have changed it up again Mick?

Pittsburgh will be strong if they get their players healthy?

Dalton still in charge at Cinci, Cinci?

Dolphins going nowhere fast?

I'm tipping Browns for Pugsley and Swagger

Hi Conte,

The usual suspects are all looking good, but the Raiders look like a surprise package. With the draft they had I wouldn't be surprised if they really pushed Denver for the division title.

Cardinals look very strong. Traded to get Chandler Jones from the Pats and had a decent first round pick in Nkemdiche. If both those hit the ground running then they might finally have a defense to match their offense. They're the strongest looking team in the NFC at present in my opinion (Pats in AFC - they'll probably go 2-2 with Brady suspended, then coast to the AFC championship).

Once again Browns are no hopers - too many holes in the roster. This season will be about growing their young players, and i'll be watching Robert Griffin III with a keen eye. Might sneak him into my FF.

Dolphins had a nice draft, but I don't think they'll be ready this year. Probably one season too early if you're hoping for a Div title. They've undoubtedly picked up a tonne of young talent, but it would take all of them gelling for them to have a shot at the postseason.

...and because none of my comments would be complete without reference to God's own football team:

The Packers have had a decent offseason thus far. We've used the draft to plug the holes in the offensive and defensive line, and will hopefully see more of Matthews back at OLB this season. Jordy Nelson coming back massively improves our vertical game, which incidentally should naturally improve our run game, which was non-existent last season (Lacy looking very lean in camp and promising big things after a torrid time last year). And, of course, we still have the best offensive player in the game - Aaron Rodgers.

Out of interest, if I were to start a daily NFL news article so that people could follow what was going on in the off season would anyone actually be interested in reading it? If yes, what sort of content would people be interested in being on it?

Better to make an article on the football forum and see who's interested

Good idea mate. Thought it might get a few people's backs up though. I've seen a few people pouncing on 'off-topic' articles since I joined.

I personally think he isn't good enough but always seems to disappear when it's time for the crunch.

Dallas doing their best to sabotage the start of their season.

Rolando McClain suspended for 10 games for substance abuse violations.

That's now 3 of their starting front 7 they'll be without:

Roland0 McClain 10 Games
Randy Gregory 4 Games
Demarcus Lawrence 4 Games

On top of that, linebacker Sean Lee is coming off knee surgery and third-round pick Maliek Collins broke his foot during offseason workouts. Restricted free agent signing Benson Mayowa, a defensive end, recently underwent knee surgery.

That defense isn't going to be able to stop a thing at this point, so the much lauded new offense looks like it means squat.

Think about the offenses they're gonna face in their division this season (Giants, Redskins and Eagles). So much for the division championship.

Cheers for the reply LL, interesting stuff .

I enjoyed watching the Cards last season so I hope you're right about the D.

Cleveland will suck forever. Every season I dream of a Browns v Lions Superbowl

This one's for you conte (lifted straight from the NFL Irresponsible July Predictions article):

Cleveland will post its first winning record since 2007

The Browns have been written off by most as a team already locked in for the No. 1 overall pick in next year's draft. The truth is that last season -- and the last 17 (mostly horrible) years in Cleveland -- is no roadmap for what comes next. Coach Hue Jackson has a history of getting the most out of his players, something no coach has done for the Browns since their return to the league in 1999. This roster is completely overhauled -- no team in the league looms as a bigger mystery. That said, Jackson -- who made Bucky Brooks' "dream coaching staff" as a receivers aide -- is the ideal figure to work with the club's five rookie wideouts, a crop led by exciting playmaker Corey Coleman.

The burning question still boils down to the quarterback, but I'd argue the Browns can win games with Josh McCown if Robert Griffin III flames out. After all, it was McCown who took the Broncos to overtime last year. For me, though, I don't think we're asking too much for any team in the NFL to win nine games. Besides, Jackson has wasted no time setting the past on fire, leaving pass rusher Paul Kruger to say: "His energy level, his enthusiasm, his positivity, it's just something that lights you on fire every time you walk in the building." Those are just words in the dead of summer, but this regime feels less encumbered by the horrors of yesterday. That will be especially true after this season. -- Marc Sessler

McClain will be a huge miss.

Could have got away with it if Jaylon Smith was progressing, but apparently his injury has not progressed as they hoped.

Given that the Cowboys doctor carried out his surgery, I was worried that they had some insider info and got a draft bargain.

I guess not

I guess at the time of making this prediction the AGM of Dallas didn't expect them to start the season without most of their starting defensive line!

A huge miss indeed. Pretty much details their season before it starts when added to the other absentees on defense.

There has been an incredible number of suspensions handed out in this off season for substance abuse right across the NFL. Imagine the scenes of it was occurring in the Premier League.

Cowboys entire defense rests on Sean Lee being fit at the start of the season

Good luck with that.

Anyone else think they may re-sign the Kraken now?

posted on 3/7/16

Every year someone predicts it to be a great year for the cowboys, they are just a bit of a mess at all levels of the organisation

posted on 3/7/16

Mick,

I think the chances of re-signing him are minimal. Way too much baggage and controversy off the field despite a strong end to his 2015 season. I know they Cowboys have said they want to keep their options open on him, and they are in dire need of an effective pass rush now.

They might be left with no choice. I rate Hardy, and will be interesting to see where he ends up.
