Agreed. Didn't understand why some people wanted shot of him in the summer. If used correctly he could be an important player for us this season

He's only getting a look in currently in the easy 'on paper' games when we need to rest our first team. The opposite of how I thought he'd be used this year tbh.

Exactly. He should be rested for the big games.

I don't mean to knock Herrera (I like him and he's been great recently) but it's the easiest comparison to make... where Herrera is intercepting, sliding around and rushing about the place, Carrick is calm collected and has a ridiculously good passing range.

I'd like to see Carrick behind Herrera and Pogba (as per the OP)

One thing in defense of Herrera in that role in the specific games he's had there, they've generally been faster paced games and it's not 100% certain that Carrick would have been able to play his calm game, with the likes of Coutinho, Firminho and Horrendouson buzzing about him.

I'd like to see the 3 of them play as you say, it's just harsh on Mata who's been affecting our attacks in a positive manner, along with Lingard.

As I said: it wasn't a knock on Herrera, he is just the most naturally comparable player who is starting currently...

I know, it's tough. Pogba, Mata, Herrera, Carrick, Lingard, Rashford, Zlatan all need to start... but there are only 6 positions.

He'll be shown up against tougher, faster midfields, too old and slow.

I have been perplexed at Carrick's lack of action.

His only weakness is a lack of mobility, which seems to be a huge factor for Jose

posted on 21/10/16

Did you not see him last night, Viva?! Running around all over the place, at one point he was pressing down our right wing

posted on 21/10/16

Yeah I saw that too, Jose has clearly sent a message in training to press high on occasion. Carrick is trying to adapt but don't think thats his game to be honest.

Thought Darmian looked like he was playing for his career too actually.

When has Carrick ever relied on his pace? He doesn't need pace because he reads the game well and is technically strong. He's been slowly declining for the past few years but pace isn't the issue with him.

I'm sure he will play a part in a lot of games this season and if fully fit then I see no issue playing him in a midfield 3 with 2 more mobile players around him.

How about Sunday, 82?

posted on 21/10/16

If's he's fully fit then I wouldn't have a problem with it. It would likely be him, Fellaini or Mata, depends what you want from your midfield.

I'm not entirely sure how Chelsea will set out, doesn't Conte like a 3 man defence with wingbacks and just the 2 in the middle?

posted on 21/10/16

Yeah, after they stuttered he tried a 3... they played better so he said he will continue with it.

Azpi, Terry, Luiz

I would guess...

With Moses and Willian as wing backs.

posted on 21/10/16

So where does Hazard play? Surely it's not wingbacks and wide offensive players too?

posted on 21/10/16

More of a front 3, than wide forwards.

--------Azpi---Terry---Luiz
Moses---------------------Willian
----------Matic---Kante
Pedro-----Costa------Hazard

Love to see a three of Carrick, Herrera and Pogba in big away games. Like this one.

Shouldn't be as important as he is, but when we play well, Carrick is in midfield.

No problem with him being one of our best 11 on the day right now, but he needs to be replaced with a box to box enforcer of the highest level as soon as possible - a different sort of midfielder entirely to Carrick.

Replacing top footballers like for like doesn't work. THere's too much of a shadow if they play a similar way to a former legend and it doesn't allow a team to evolve in style. Stay the same for too long and rivals will get used to to playing you. See Wenger vs Fergie for an example.

Wish we'd got Vidal a few seasons ago. No one around right now who's good enough as a box to box player and with the ball technically. Where did all the proper midfielders go...

Carrick's one flaw has been with the pressing game... both trying to press another team or being pressed by the opposition.

I think that is the main reason he is out of favour with Jose. Against teams that don't have a high tempo pressing game, he will shine.

Was about to write the same, only less clearly.
He was brilliant yesterday though. Just think under more pressure, he will resort to the shorter safer passes

posted on 21/10/16

I dunno about that, some of the passes he played whilst looking the other way were mental... he just knows what's happening around him.

Not any more. He has gone past that sell by date.

If we had have played Carrick instead of Herrera against the dips, we would have been under attack for most of the game.

What about play him WITH Herrera?
