Admin, will you be opening the old thread with the new rules, or is this going to be the place? There's a lot of people subscribed to the old thread who won't necessarily come to/find the new one.
If this is to be the new one, it might be best to put house rules up in the OP so that no one can cry foul of their ban.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why do you crave it back?
Most who want to talk politics are here.
Ging was fed up being abused politically and personally, so took a break and guys such as Ivan no longer bother with it, so people made decisions not based on that thread.
Also, guys like Fields and kloppy vanished off that election thread, so again, folk just move on.
You feel the old thread was more to your liking, but the same folk here will be posting...it's just that a more diverse group came along in recent times.
The OP on the old thread said it was biased, but that was years back and he bolted lol.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There's loads who aren't here and seeing it pop up with the new rules might breathe some fresh views back in.
Crouchend, rith, Blarmy etc haven't posted here and were active at the end, and might well actually want to partake when people are actively being removed for abuse or attempting to wind others up
Tam, Rosso, black hawk might want to partake again with the abuse restrictions in place and are probably unaware of the changes.
NPE and Dave might even be able to join in like adults. The other thread was just better subscribed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I hear you.
As we see, Blarmy is here and Hawk on a break.
Others know we are here, but perhaps the thread ran it's course.
Dave might need a break too and if his health, mental or physical, needs to be his focus now, arguing here is no good.
Tam got fed up as did Rosso, but they were not bullied or attacked.
Surely we could apply the no personal abuse rule here now on this thread?
That might help

Not watched this yet but a lockdown debate. Should be interesting to hear both sides within the same video. I much prefer when people like Hitchens’ views are challenged directly and conversely when he has the opportunity to directly challenge the pro-lockdown argument.
It’s Peter Hitchens vs Dan Hodges
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll give it a watch In a bit, the problem with such head to head debates is that it's not necessarily the best idea that wins out, but the greater intellect and debater.
Given the news yesterday on the Kent variant, and the study results in AZ Vs South Africa I think there's little debate to be had with regards to lockdowns, a necessary evil to try and achieve 0 covid.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I had the same thought that you mention when I started it up as I feared that Hitchens would just out-debate him but so far Hodges is holding up well.
The problem I find with well-argued debates is i end up agreeing with both 😂😂😂
Hodges makes a point early on about the vaccine being a game changer and that at this point it is probably worth the next few months pain as the vaccines clearly are working very well.
I suppose that Hitchens’ point will then be the proposition of zero covid which I am very much against unless there is a huge change in the virus to the point where vaccines do practically nothing.
The report on the Oxford vaccine and South African variant is being very badly reported imo as the headlines are just about the 10% effective. What they fail to report properly whereby most people are aware, is that this 10% is for mild and moderate cases/symptoms but is still (going from memory) unknown what the effect is on the most important area being hospitalisation & deaths.
So on the assumption that the vaccines do a large amount of work against hospitalisations & deaths then we should have nothing like lockdown in place.
Listening to it whilst typing, it’s a decent debate, both making their points well.

While I would welcome further studies I can't imagine the vaccine is more effective against serious cases than it would be against mild ones, scientists have already said that this is because AZ is massively less effective against the spike protein the virus uses to attach to cells.
They have also said that the Kent variant has the same mutation, this information tells us that the mutations can and will get out of hand VERY quickly if we keep letting infections drive up. They are already saying work is starting for an autumn vaccination against this new spike protein.. that's just two variants that have been sequenced. We need to rapidly get to acceptance that 0 covid is the only real option to end this mess..
Otherwise we will be repeating the last year ad nauseum until we find a part of the virus that doesn't mutate to attack..
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I cannot get behind 0 covid. We cannot treat this like smallpox when we have functioning vaccines. If this was March 2020 where no vaccines were even dreamt of within 8-12 months then there could be an argument made but to treat it like smallpox now would be overkill imo.
I really do think people are seriously underestimating the effects of the borrowing that our government has done. This borrowing will have to be paid back which will of course lead to tax rises but with the huge number of job losses that will come once furlough is lifted and the huge amount of small business that will go under and not be able to return, the government will have to print money which obviously causes inflation.
Bye bye value of savings & those on fixed wages which is most people, good luck earning £30,000 a year when the value of that pound is a lot less.
I don’t disagree with the current lockdown and I think the government are getting the timing right this time but to aim for zero or near to zero infections at this stage with vaccines available is probably one of the worst things we could do.
What does S.W.A.T. stand for?
Sleeping with a tart.
I know a lot of people on here hated the austerity measures and by all means I don’t agree with privatised profits but socialised losses that we saw in 2008, but the reality was that we HAD to bail them out and that austerity measures got the debt levels down a lot.
Looking back now, if we hadn’t done that, with COVID-19 now the country would be absolutely done.
Forget the numbers of homeless, hospital waiting times, unemployment levels that we have seen this past 12 years. We would be seeing something the likes that I would say none of us have ever seen in our lifetimes.
We need to prepare for the austerity that will come just like it has this past 12 years but probably worse.
The crude measurement of the economy might benefit from a V shape recovery but life in real terms will be extremely tight for us all for the next ten years, of that I have no doubt. I’d advise people with savings to start investing more of it than they might do normally because that spare £10,000 or £50,000 might end up being seriously devalued.
Good time to re-consider wealth taxing IMO.
The money exists, it just isn't circulating freely enough down the pyramid. Easier said than done of course.
I would be very opposed to any income tax/VAT/pension age raises to try to pay off the national debt.
On the study of the Oxford vaccine vs South African variant:
“What the study results really tell us is that, in a relatively young age group demographic – with very low prevalence of morbidities such as hypertension and diabetes etc – the vaccine does not protect against mild to moderate infection.”
He said its effectiveness against serious infection could possibly be inferred based on the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which uses “similar technology”. “Extrapolating from that, there’s still some hope that the AstraZeneca vaccine might well perform as well as the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in a different age demographic that are at highest risk of severe disease,” he said.
So we can’t forget that this very small study was done largely with younger people and Prof Shabir Madhi from the University of the Witwatersrand, who led the Oxford/AstraZeneca trial in South Africa is sounding comfortable at least to extrapolate that it should follow the Johnson & Johnson results.
My point in raising it earlier is again the bloody media screaming almost desperately that ‘AZ is useless against the SA strain’ and therefore sending a lot of people into panic and causing more fear and doubt instead of fairly depicting what the expert has said.
Scientists must be so fed up of giving interviews and then being misrepresented I’m surprised that they still give them.
SatNav, weed stocks. Apparently the Dems will take it off the list of Federal Schedule1 drugs and there are already some states have legalised it.
This stuff really is a new market and I can see it competing with alcohol more and more as a healthier buzz. Then there's the medical side with CBD being used by more and more people as an analgesic. Old farts I know who've never smoked a joint are taking it for arthritis and other aches and pains.

Oooof god no thanks. Why should the wealthy bail us all out when they already contribute way more than their fair share?
What’s a pensioner going to do when they own a house outright and have to pay a wealth tax on it every year? Where do they get that money from?
Ok so we just do middle-aged wealthy people? With two kids and other outgoings where are they going to get the money from?
Valuations of property owned every year in order to pay your wealth tax? How’s that gonna work?
Like you said easier said than done but a horrible idea that will just kill off motivation for people to earn well.
I think a tax increase for everyone but done progressively and with different bands than we have now.
So something like this (I’ve not done a mathematical model I’m just spitballing here)
Basic rate up by 0.5%
Higher rate up by 0.75%
Additional rate up by 1.25%
Extra additional rate (say £1m upwards) up by 2%
Something like that I think would be better but everyone should contribute.

Hadn’t given it much thought haha wonder what the numbers are looking like.
Out of interest how much does it cost you when you go to your shop? Is it quite cheap?
Just did some quick maths on my rough numbers above and those tax increases wouldn’t even scratch the surface

Hadn’t given it much thought haha wonder what the numbers are looking like.
Out of interest how much does it cost you when you go to your shop? Is it quite cheap?

Just did some quick maths on my rough numbers above and those tax increases wouldn’t even scratch the surface
