Macron phones Trump after being hemmed in by president’s motorcade


Emmanuel Macron was stranded on the streets of New York after police blocked roads to make a path for Donald Trump’s motorcade.

In a now widely shared video, the French president got out of his vehicle, called the US president and jokingly asked him to “clear the road”.

Mr Macron had just left the UN general assembly where he recognised a Palestinian state in a speech on Monday. But in a scene of utter contrast, he was seen indignantly arguing with a police officer, demanding he be allowed through the barricades.

Apologising, the officer explains the roads have been closed to make space for Mr Trump’s presidential motorcade, which can consist of more than a dozen vehicles. The president is in New York before his address to the UN on Tuesday.

“If you don’t see [the motorcade], let me pass,” Mr Macron said, hanging over the metal fence.

Forced to wait, he rings Mr Trump. “Hey, how are you? Guess what, I am waiting in the street because everything is frozen for you, ha!” he tells the president.

A video later shows him walking down the street towards the French embassy still on the phone to Mr Trump. During his impromptu tour of Manhattan, Mr Macron posed for photos with passers-by and is even seen being kissed by a man on the head, which he laughs at.
