What a finish that is.

Messi absolutely anonymous tonight, so much quality up front and they cannot create anything.

He's always anonymous away from Barca

I am going to get in here before the United fans start slating Messi. I'm sorry, but his record is every bit as good - if not better than Ronaldo's. I like Ronaldo but he is the master of his own hype.

Also, he "won" a dodgy penalty against Spain. His free kick was class although probably shouldn't have been a foul. His header yesterday would have been scored by my dead 128 year old 4ft8 Greek grandmother.

We all know he's a great player but it doesn't mean Messi isn't. I personally prefer Messi but each to his own.

While I think Messi is technically a better player Ronaldo LOVES being the go-to man for Portugal, he revels in it in same way Zlatan did for Sweden. Messi doesn’t seem to have that mentality, ego, whatever.

This Argentina side are awful. Not a lot Messi can do about that on his own. They’re too heavy. Amazing strike force with nothing to back them up and supply them. Defending is comical at times.

I think that is nicely put.

Doesn't help they have a keeper almost as dodgy as the Spanish one.

And if Ronaldo had played for Chelsea you'd think the opposite most likely. Come back when you have received something valuable to add.

I don't think I would. At no point am I saying he's a bad player - second best player in the world in my opinion.

Don’t get the Messi slating or Ronaldo slating. We’re very lucky to be watching two of the best to ply the game. They’ve pretty much set the bar for consistency for the majority of their careers.

It’s hard to choose between them, Ronaldo is better in the air and penalties, Messi is better with the back at his feet, passing and free kicks. But overall there output is very similar. Goals goals and more goals

To be fair to messi he hasn’t been helped by that awful defence and midfield and the Croats have defended deep and in number.

I actually think if you could hand pick the side then it would be Messi for me too. However Ronaldo is far more versatile and could almost play for any team.

Portugal play to ronaldos strengths. Sit back and counter leaving Ronaldo space. Argentina play slow turgid football facing 10 men behind the ball.
He can’t bail them out every time. Feel sorry for him.

Exactly.

Plus you have to give Croatia plaudits for defending. England would have had trouble in that group.

Any chance Messi decides to throw another fit and decide to retire, if Argentina do not go through?

Other than Ronaldo and messi the other players are matched pretty evenly but argies probably have a bit more additional firepower, one is carrying his team all by himself, I think messi has given up with his lot, he did it 4years ago for the most part but now he looks like he can’t be asked

posted on 21/6/18

Yeah but just in general. Argentina have too many egos and players wanting to win it themselves and think they are better than they are. Ronaldo has a good supporting cast even if they are not world class.

Croatia have been fantastic too

Ronaldo would be more productive than Messi in every top club side bar two. Barca obviously one and probably City as well.

I don't think he's close to his genius self when he's out of the the tippy tappy environment.

I once heard this or words to that effect:

If I wanted someone whose play uplifts the soul: Messi.

If I wanted someone to play for my life: CR.

Both a different level to anyone else.

…………………

Aye, it’s a bit “Blur v Oasis”, just enjoy both, Messi and Ronaldo, Roll With It and Country House, it’s all good...

Maybe I’m just getting old, maybe it’s the cult of celebrity we live in but I don’t this supporting a player as if they were their own club. People talk about Messi and Ronaldo like it’s them they support rather than the clubs they play for, weird.
