I think it's because black people have a history of being judged on their physical attributes and not their intelligence.
They were (and to some degree still are) often thought of as physically superior genetically but mentally and academically inferior. These racist tropes were a contributing factor which led to their enslavement.
Like it or not, a lot of black people find this offensive and this isn't a new thing, they always have. It wouldn't hurt just to NOT call them BBQ's.
