Allison's distribution adds another dimension to our play.

VVD for me is the best CB in the league. A Rolls Royce of a player.

Completely agree. They both make the rest of the team relaxed. I used to cringe at corners. Not any more!!

Was watching Ederson yesterday and thinking no keeper around was anywhere close to him in terms of distribution and passing.

Alisson showed tonight he is capable of producing passes just as good, it's like playing with another midfielder.

We have gone down the same route with Arrizabalaga. People laughed at Pep's comment about his keepers needing to play with their feet but it adds a whole new dimension to teams play in the modern era, i'd go as far as saying it's crucial.

The difference a good keeper makes is astounding!

There’s no panicking or worry he just picks a player out, doesn’t matter if it’s 5 or 50 yards.

Yeah it's the modern game/coaches style. On MNF pre-game they were talking about it a lot with Arsenal as well, would expect Leno to play more for them.
Spurs do it to some degree with Lloris too but their centre backs are naturally very good at playing out and the principal is still there.

Mourinho meanwhile is being left behind in the dark ages.

Have to give props to Gomez, he was excellent too.

We all knew Moreno..Mignolet...Skrtel were the weak links, didnt take klopp long to fk em off really. Its no suprise that when they were replaced that we have improved.

What is surprising is that VVD, Alisson and Robertson are absolutely top top top replacements, thats why the defence is massively improved.

Loving the Gomez VVD partnership.

Martin Keown called them a rolls Royce partnership.

Lovren may have a problem getting back in the side

Moreno and Mignolet are still here. And both are current first choice backups at the club in their positions

having a goalkeeper able to play with their feet is nothing new, at least not for us.
I remember watching Grobbelaar taking the ball out, and just keep going, passing a couple of opposition players, almost reaching the oppo penalty area before passing the ball....

imagine the apoplexy on here if one of our keepers did that these days.

Tbh at this point I can't see anyone getting in past the current back 5

Was just about to post that

Virgil van Dijk's game by numbers vs. Crystal Palace:

100% tackles won
92.4% pass accuracy
91 touches
10 successful long balls
9 aerial duels won
8 clearances
2 tackles
1 clean sheet

Beast!!

I wonder how Lovren feels. It might be the same reaction when he was asked about vvd joining.

Gomez deserves to start next game and the next until his form drops and thats how it should be. He’s learning loads next to Virjil

Gomez is excellent for what he is (and can still improve) but I think Lovren will come in and surprise a few people this season. I think he's matured and having VVD next to jm has helped (as it seemingly does everyone). Lovren is a far better than average passer than most cb's and has a very good skill set. This is the best I've felt about our cb's since Hyypia, Carragher and Henchoz tbh and Allison is not a far cry from Reina, possibly better.

I wonder what VVDs current market value is after 8 months with the club?

He’s actually not worth selling for any price given the unlikelihood of replacing him.

But hypothetically, I’d say he’s minimum £150m

I said it before but I'll say it again. For once I'm confident we can end the league season with conceding less than a goal a game.

Nobody should just walk into this team as of now. Even Wijnaldum held his position pretty well last night.

The value of players is dependent on who is buying and if they are not willing to buy elsewhere.Hence some of the ridiculous figures we have seen in the market.

The only reason van Dijk cost that much was because Liverpool were not willing to buy anyone else. The average price for an expensive defender or fullback is about 50 million and that is the ceiling in my opinion which City has paid for the likes of Laporte, Mendy, Walker.

I doubt a defender or goal keeper will cost more than 100 million unless its a release clause activated.

Even the younger Varane who has more top flight experience shouldn't cost anything close to 100 million.

I like what clubs did this summer of not buying for the sake of buying (Real, Spurs, while clubs like City, Arsenal etc spent less than normal.)

The market needs to self regulate.Last summer we almost signed Lemar for 88 million pounds. He went to Atletico this summer for 55 million.

I also doubt Pogba would fetch anything close to 120 million in this market

Allison dropped a couple coming for the ball on crosses, ref gave him a break on one even though his own defender nudged him.

VVD is quality, wish we'd gone in for him.
