The Importance of CL Qualification For Us

I absolutely loved our CL nights last year and was far more down after the Juventus match than the Utd FA cup semi.

It's a difficult one. Ideally we need a cup and top 4 (obvs ). I think the Spurs players need / would prefer a cup this season than CL qualification.

Trophy all day long

It is important when we have to replace players like Toby, Danny Rose, Dembele. CL football will allow us to sign a higher quality replacement. Of course we will need to actually spend money and pay decent wages also.

Based on what happened this summer, it would have been better to win a trophy last year.

The unknown is whether the likes of Kane, Dele, Eriksen staying at Spurs is dependent upon CL qualification.

I'm summary this year we should try to win a trophy and qualify for CL - even 4th plus the Carabao cup would be decent.

It’s always important to play in the best competitions to keep players.

Also would be nice to have it going into the new stadium next season.

Really want a trophy though this season

I think you'll be following the Arsenal route for a good few years to pay off the stadium. The only way you'll be able to do that is to achieve CL football year on year as cheap as possible. Signing your key players up to long term contracts was more important than signing players last summer.

Love being in the top 4 and like flashy says, the CL nights at Wembley were fantastic. We now need to win a trophy to break the seal and move onwards and upwards. It's our time, along with the Scousers imo.

“Spurs need to win a trophy”. Does this mean any trophy?

Personally I don’t care one little bit about the League Cup, that’s for teams like Birmingham or Swansea to celebrate. As usual it will be awarded to the team with the best B side who has also got lucky with the draw. We won it in 2008 and it did precisely nothing for us as a club.

The FA Cup is more appealing, and I would love to win that. But the matches come thick and fast at a time where the league comes down to the wire and CL is in full swing. Again, success depends a lot on the draw (Arsenal’s p*ss easy home runs to the trophy recently). We could ‘prioritise’ the FA Cup and then draw City away in Round 3. Even if we do win it, it’s hardly likely to keep players here on its own.

So it comes down to the PL and CL. As usual I’m sure we’ll put in a good challenge for the title, but with City’s shameless financial doping it will be tough. A CL run would be fantastic, but we need to be somewhat realistic: last year Liverpool has one of the easiest ever routes to the final and still didn’t win.

Finishing top 4 and the odd CL run is (sadly) the most important thing in improving club stature. It’s most important for keeping our players and manager, and attracting new stars and a larger fanbase. League Cups are irrelevant and FA Cups have a fleeting impact. I wish it was different, but that’s where modern football is at.

In this order Worcester

1. Premier League
2. Champions League
3. FA Cup
4. League Cup

Personally I wouldn’t mind seeing us finish third and having a go to win the Europa. I really think we can and it’s an awesome trophy to win.

Unpopular opinion admittedly.

If finishing in the top 4 is that much more important than winning trophies like the FA cup then why did Spurs fans think otherwise when this is basically all that Arsenal did every season?

Interesting angle Edin and as a consequence of being knocked out of the CL couldn't agree more but I wouldn't try to engineer it from the off!!!

Imo it’s because arsenal were a top team winning league titles where we are a team going the other way.

From mid table to top table

Think right now Spurs need regular CL qualification, both for financial reasons but also to grow the rep of the club around Europe.

Having CL one season doesn't suddenly mean you can sign top players, like we qualified under Rodgers, tried to get Sanchez and ended up with Ballotelli.

Spurs have a very good team in place, a manager whose reputation is growing all the time, new stadium in a very desirable city, if you get regular CL football for the next few seasons, building o n what you've done in the CL to date, then that will build the club and set really strong foundations.

Chelsea / United and even Arsenal can afford to miss out on it at the moment, united and Chelsea have won it recently, and while Arsenal have never won it they're a very well known CL club around Europe.

Trophies are great of course, but I'd pick CL qualification over a domestic cup every time, you get to compete in the best football competition there is (I include the world cup) and it sets a standard for the club to try better the previous season.

I can't stand Liverpool as much as the next person but to call their run to the final easy is bull.

They played the best team in PL history and a team that won the group of death with us and Atletico en route to the final.

Agreed about the league cup. We won it in 2008 and barely had a good performance for the rest of the season, and Berbatov and Keane left that very summer.

Utd won it recently and heralded it as the 'first' trophy which breeds the mentality for winning more. They even managed to win the Europa after that, and look at them now! Hardly going from strength to strength.

Without trying to be funny mate, but Spurs are also a well known team around Europe, they have still won more European Trophies than Arsenal.

Man City of last season are nowhere near the best team in Prem History. Man United won 13 Prem Titles, including plenty of back to back seasons. When City can do that, then perhaps they can claim to be the best Prem side in history.

It wasn’t the same TEAM that won 13 titles it was the club

Player for player that city team is one of the best ever to win the league
