Which category would a box-to-box midfielder fall into?
Hate the international breaks, you get idiots coming out with all sorts.

What's so stupid about my suggestion? The point is, in its current format, defenders stand little to no chance of winning the Ballon D'or. All I'm suggesting is that we accommodate them by splitting the award in two. Verane won the World Cup & Champions league & was overlooked. What the hell did Salah win? How did he fare during the World Cup?
I've always thought the award should be split up in 4... GK, Defender, Midfielder and winger/striker.
It's criminal that genuine great players like Buffon, Cech, Casillas, Neuer etc haven't won a Ballon D'Or and never will yet players like Neymar will be nominated every season.
The only fair way is so each position gets recognised.
Ronaldo will win the Ballon D'Or simply because Madrid won the CL.. Sergio Ramos and Modric in particular were just as important as Ronaldo but he'll get all the plaudits.
The award is a popularity contest atm and it needs changed.

There are box-to-box midfielders who are more offensive minded (like Gerrard & Naby Keita), and there box-to-box midfielders who are more defensive minded (Keane & Viera). Not that difficult really.
They already have this. They have it for each position. It's good for the game when offensive players win the ballon d'or, if a defender wins it you have to ask questions of the quality of the forward players.
Take United for example, 4 years on the bounce DDG has won player, of course he has been our best player but it just so happens that our forward players have not performed in that time, making his contribution more important.
That's ignoring the fact that this post is probably a WUM

I think you'er being a little bit unfair on defenders. Them being good should not be translated as the strikers being bad. We've seen games were some of the world's best forwards get their best efforts thwarted by a keeper that's in great form. These are efforts that could've went in had a different goalie had been between the sticks. When you're good, you're good.

They do UEFA CL awards for best in each position.
Navas somehow won the best keeper despite doing his best to get Madrid put out.

I'm talking about the overall award (i..e Player of the Year award). It has to be split in two.
I think we should a 'best player' award for every position tbh. And then they all can be included in a 'Team of the Year' type thingy to fully acknowledge each position & it's respective 'best player'.
I think this will really highlight how vital each position is to the game.

Your at attempts at sarcasm are less than impressive. You're c;early missing the point. I know that FIFA acknowledges the best player in each position by releasing its annual ''FIFA XI''. What I'm reffering to is the MAIN award. The Fifa World Player of the Year award. I am of the opinion that it should be split in 2. One for offensive players, and the other for defensive players. What's so difficult to understand?
Don't see what the op has said here that is wrong
What about players like Thomas Vermeulen, Marcos Alonso, Christian Benteke, Hector Bellerin, Simon Mignolet, Welbeck.
These players play in positions that you want to class as 'defensive' and 'offensive' but they are poor at the jobs they're supposed to perform based on your definitions.
Are you looking to narrow the pool of talent to which the votes can be selected from?
Are you inadvertently making it worse for defensive & offensive players to be recognised?
Vermeulen scores goals better than he defends. Are you classing him as offensive or defensive? Defensively he doesnt have the talent of his peers. Offensively, he'll never get the goals tally of the offensive players who play further forward.
Why are you doing this to these players?
you lost me when you said umitti had been crucial for club and country, his defending got barca knocked out of the cl and at the world cup his handball was probably the worst peice of defending your likely to see.
as it goes, defenders usually arent as good as attackers, thats why they dont win.
They already have a team of the year.
Not sure who gets to choose the formation though.
What the OP and subsequent discussion hasn't touched on is that the standard of defending now is, imo, the worst it has ever been across the game (brought about because tackling is virtually outlawed in the game now).
Defenders aren't winning the awards, not because they are being unfairly treated, but because they simply aren't good enough.
Happy to be corrected but I think Cannavaro was the last defender to win such an award? A worthy winner at the time but I can't think of another defender who showed the class of Fabio across a season.

Defenders aren't as good as attackers you say? I disagree. That's like saying the ''hearing'' end of your phone is better than the ''talking'' end of your phone. Both are equally as important but perform different functions. Look at it this way: Imagine you had half a blanket on a bitterly cold winter evening. Which half of your body would you cover? The top half (waist up) or the bottom half (waist down)? Whichever part you cover you'll still be cold. Hence I'm saying, defenders are just as important as strikers. They are just as good as strikers. Its just that they perform a different role to strikers.
I agree that defending isn't as good as what it used to be.
For me Godin is the best CB around, he makes defending look easy.
If you split the award in to two then it isn't the best player though is it?

Its not that today's defenders are horrible. I think it has to do with the position/role itself having changed. The same goes for goalies. Gone are the days of big, burly, tough tackling blokes like Gentile. It's all about having good feet & awareness. So if you're basing your comment based on comparing the current crop of defenders with their predecessors, then you're comparing apples with oranges.

It is still the same award. The academy award for best male actor holds the same weight as the award for best female actress. The Player of the year (offensive) award will hold the same weight as Best player of the year (defensive). It is the same award, but it is given to players who play in two different halves of the pitch.
Have a winner in the defensive and offensive categories and then have them go 1 v 1 at the Award Ceremony for the main prize. That'll then make it worth watching.

I hear you, but I don't think it is practical. which has more weight: Goals or Clean Sheets? Imagine if we had a scenario were both the Offensive & Defensive players have record breaking seasons (the offensive player with record number of goals scored, the defensive player with least number of goals conceeded). Who do you give the award to?
