So how do you know if you might have this condition? What are the symptoms to look out for and is there anything obvious to suggest you might have it?

I think that happens when you’re not in a deep sleep, but half way between being asleep and awake. Can also happen when you’ve had too much sleep.

Doesn't sleep paralysis mean you get to see Slender Man or something?

Usually you wake up with a headache/sore throat and just generally feel like youve never slept. I kept on having micro naps at work without ever realizing it until my manager pointed it out. Went to the docs , got referred to a hospital did some breathing test followed by sleep study . Got a letter 4 days later for another appointment and got told the results.

Mate, I've got this.
I was waking up all the time feeling like I couldn't breath, sleeping in the day. I looked and felt like I'd had 10 Stella's the night before. I've always snored badly and from someone who was fairly fit, I gradually piled on about 5st and had high cholesterol and blood pressure stressed out and was pretty much due to making an appointment to see the big guy upstairs.
I had the sleep test and was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea stopping breathing 60-70 times.
Ive been on CPAP for 2 years now, it does take some getting used to, but persevere with it, your body needs to adjust to it, you will get used to it and the small side effects that come with it
Now I sleep solid for 6-7 hours, wake up completely refreshed, lost most of the weight & bloods etc down to normal. Its worth the effort and coping with the negative side effects that you have now.

At it’s most severe it can wake you up, a reflex in a way as there is a lack of oxygen in your blood. But as others have said a common presentation is just being tired throughout the day, as in literally to the point you fall asleep spontaneously, usually when sat down. And remember the biggest risk factors are weight an alcohol. Big tonsils / being unlucky with your pharyngeal anatomy can also factor but I guess you don’t know that unless your doctor points it out. And also anecdotally it is usually the snorers who go on to develop it. Your doc may send you for a sleep test if suspected

Would be an unusual presentation

When I say it’s usually the snorers, not saying all snorers will develop it, more that anecdotally most people with OSA are also snorers

It took me a good 3-4 months to get used to it. First I had the catch up of sleep debt, where I didn't feel it was working, then I had the maddest most vivid dreams which I'd never had before, you can also get like chapped skin around the mask seal. But after a while all this goes away, I now just put the mask on just before sleep and wake up 7 hours later fully refreshed. I used to lay in till midday every weekend and sleep in the day all the time. Now I can't get back to sleep after waking up as I am fully refreshed after 6-7 hours & I can't sleep in the day even if I wanted
I know about it if I don't use the CPAP, I feel like ****. Wouldn't do without it now, felt like that after about 6 months of use
Hope that helps you mate
