Starship Troopers

Lashings of gore, glorious over the top violence , loads of T&A, giant freaky space bugs and it's funny as f###!

"They've sucked his brains out!"

Truly awesome movie.

Is superb. One of the best war/anti war films ever. The new series sky did isn’t too bad either.

Harlequin- apocypse now is good. But I think suffered from a fewproduction issues. As Coppola famously said. ‘We has access to too much money, too much equipment, and little by little, we went insane”

It shows.

Saving private Ryan for the opening 30 mins. Ferocious. I imagine capturesi the horror aa well as a film could.

Full Metal Jacket is an all-time classic. I loved The Hurt Locker - some really tense scenes and great performances. I’m a huge fan of Black Hawk Down though. One of my absolute favourite films and I can’t put my finger on why. Amazing visuals, soundtrack and performances help though.

Yeah black hawk is relentless, claustrophobic, and true for the most part. Hurt locker is great too.

Full metal..never warmed to it that much. It’s vsry good, don’t get me wrong, just never quite gripped me.

Platoon, is my favourite, it’s got a nice slant on society, captures the My Li atrocity (which is still outrageous today, given the incompetent cover up and reaction of the govt), and the whole Barnes vs Elias (right v left) was great.

Das boot is awesome though. The end...

Paths of Glory
Pork Chop Hill
The Longest Day
All Quiet on the Western Front (both)

Not quite a war film as such but war orientated:
Breaker Morant

Some great mentions.. Love The Great Escape & Das Boot. Casualties of War. Full Metal Jacket.
Does Crimsom Tide count for this list?.
Would've said Escape to Victory but, Stallone as Goalie doesn't fly..
A guilty pleasure is Hamburger Hill

Most have already been mentioned. Downfall is superb as well.

Baz, a good point about Apocalypse and the equipment,I always thought that they must have had their own army making that film ! ,and the cost must have been prohibitive.

I think they went a bit mad all round on that film. A product of the time I guess, half war film half acid trip.

The production ‘hatdships’are well k own. It’s quite a mad tale in itself.

You have to remember in part, it’s loosely based on conrad’s Heart of darkness.

Some great films mentioned so far

I love Where Eagles Dare - shows the lengths to which British intelligence were prepared to go in WWII to flush out a traitor

I like a lot of the classics - Great Escape, Dambusters, Longest Day, A Bridge Too Far, Battle of Britain (just to see Susannah York in her underwear), Private Ryan, Sink the Bismark, to name but a few

one that I just never ever coukd enjoy, or even like was the thin red line. Just did not find it intersting in the slightest.

For political side, the darkest hour is pretty decent. As is enigma.

Enigma’s story is amazing when looked at in real life. About Turing (effectively godfather of computers, so nearly everything you take for granted now) coming up with a way to break German code signals, basically had a ride turning effect on the war, massive.

Turned out to be a homosexual, crime back then, and I believe was prosocuted as such, and later reported to have committed suicide by cyanide (via Apple pips-in the days when that was your go to get out). Apparently how we thanked someone who’s contribution basically had a enormous impact to the war...and the future! Amazing how they just glossed over his impact. I think he needs a proper movie

You have to wonder sometimes.

So, in a thread for war movies, you’ve thrown in a series? Admittedly some of the scenes in GoT put movies to shame.

For that I’m going rto have to put in braveheart, not for the war part, or the true story, but it’s a hell of a ride.

The beach battle in Saving Private Ryan is magnificent but as an overall watch Downfall and Schindlers list are my best two. Fiennes performance as Amon Goeth is off the scale.

Inglorious Bsterds deserves a mention it may be a load of nonsense but its total entertainment and Waltz steals the show.

Most overated was Dunkirk it was ok but after all the hype I thought it was going to be alot better than that.
