To be fair to sky, you can't overestimate how badly they needed the publicity from the CWC final by making it Free to air. Look at the sports they've lost recently:
Champions league
their monopoly on EPL
ATP and US Open Tennis
La liga
I'm currently signed up to Now TV for the cricket but usually I only sign up for it for about 3 or 4 weeks per year.
Sky also lost IPL, Ashes in Austrailia, Big bash
sky would have out bid BT if they wanted the ashes down under. since the viewing figures were very tiny. It wasn't worth buying.
