opinions of Erling Braut Haaland

Given the sort of form Martial is in and if he's still performing at a similar level near the end of the season, I doubt we'll spend big money on another striker.

I think it's more likely we'll look at a more experienced back up maybe as soon as January and add more goals by improving other areas of the team.

Haaland already looks very good for his age even if he has only played in Norway and Austria (everybody starts somewhere) but we really need to start buying some established quality.

I'm a fan of Martial... but what the fack is this??

Martial has barely been above average this season. He's been injured for most of it and has had like 2 outstanding halves this season. Most of the rest has been average or utter nonsense.

He was shiet against Norwich, the awesome goal papering over that; rubbish in the first half against Brighton (awesome in the second); totally useless away against Partizan; and absolute rubbish against Bournemouth.

Y'all need to get a grip... He needs to show what he did in the 2nd half against Brighton for a 15 game stretch before we even start making suggestions like this...

I hope he does though but maybe wait for that level of consistency first

Not that I'm gloating (I mean, I am...), but I've been saying that Martial's game was better suited to playing centrally than out wide for absolutely ages. I've detailed why I thought so many times over so won't do it again here, but I'm not surprised how well he's doing with a proper run in that position.

I was thinking Berba the other day how you were one of the few who truly believed that Martial could do what he has through the middle. General consensus seemed to be that he was better suited to the wing. I was personally move in favour or Rashford through the middle. Not because I doubted Martial there, but thought that Rashford was better through the middle than wide. However, Rashford's finishing at the moment just isn't where it needs to be. Martial is more clinical and we could do with him in the middle hopefully getting chances. He is also calmer once we get into the box than Rashford and more likely to make things happen when we are in good areas.

What has really pleased me is the linkup that we have seen with Martial and Rashford - probably been better because Martial in central where he dictates and holds up more. Still plenty of room for improvement, but we have looked more fluid of late. We just really need a clever AM in there now to pull the strings.

Let not get carried away just yet, he’s done well against Norwich, Partizan and Brighton recently. He’s shown equally good form (if not better) in a short run of games for us out wide too. Let’s see how he does over a period of games and against some decent opposition before claiming he’s proven himself as a CF.

Agree with this.

The same thing applies to the whole team given how many times over the years we've gone on an improved run only to turn to complete sh!t again.

Agree that we need some quality in AM. Pogba should really be played there whilst McT & Fred are showing good form.

Martial & Rashford each have qualities that the other doesn't, but their link up has been really good of late. If we trawled back far enough, I'd actually written that Rashford & Martial would be an ideal strike partnership. Obviously we won't see that very often unless we adopt the 3-5-2.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Some of his best games in previous seasons have come as a CF, it's just that he's played there so much less we tend to forget. I recall two specifically in which he was outstanding - one against West Ham and the other against Everton (both away from home). As I recall, he started the Everton game on the bench, but Lukaku went off about 10 minutes into the game with a knock and Martial came on.

And it hasn't just been the last few games.

He was good against Palace - got an assist for James, and should have been awarded a penalty. One of their defenders should have been sent off after good work from him. He also flicked the ball to McT who then won a penalty (which we missed). In other words, he played a key role in all our our best moments in that game.

He got a cracking goal against Wolves running off the shoulder but was largely starved of service for the rest of the game - story of our season, frankly. He scored against Chelsea with a proper poachers effort...

He's basically been involved in terms of goals, assists or key moments in every match where we've looked remotely threatening.

He's having a really good season so far.

He’s having a good season and long may it continue but I still think people are getting a bit carried away. We bought him off the back of his stats improving moving centrally for Monaco too but I don’t think it’s clear that he’s better centrally or that he’s proven that he can take that role consistently. He had quite a few poor performances for us there too in the past and until this season has looked better out wide. Like TRS said, so often players have shown a bit of consistency to then go and mess it up.

Let’s see how he does by the end of the season before claiming he’s clearly better centrally. Hopefully, if Pogba can return soon his creativity can help Martial and our other forwards too.

Sorry but this is a bit of a mess, his movement and ability to play with his back to goal has absolutely changed our recent form. We’re creating more chances and scoring more goals as a result. If all you can see are his goals then you need to study the game a bit more.

Look at the position Martial took up for the build up to Rashford missing that sitter against Brighton. His positioning and play for Rashfords goal against Norwich. He collected two assists in the Brighton game, he probably should have had 4. His goal against Partisan with the outside of his foot after drinking around 2-3 players was beautiful.

Wow!

Whether he or Werner is the better bet I don't know.

I'm what way do you think he's nothing like Lukaku? Looked very similar to Lukaku when I've watched him in the group stages of the CL. Strong, holds the ball up, target man, good in the air.

Faster, more tricks, better control, more aggressive in a good way. Wants to make things happen, not just waiting for the opportunity.
Lukaku was a poacher, Haaland more of an all round striker.

I'll give you better control. Faster and more tricks? Nah, about the same. Lukaku is not a poacher.
