Some quotes from the BBC:

"A few other clubs had shown interest, I said 'please, just pick United, if it's going to be possible'," he said.

Speaking to the club website, he added: "At 11pm in Shanghai, my agent called me [to say] that United want to do the deal, so I woke up that night and started looking for a translator to go to the directors' room and hit his door.

"'My agent wants to speak to you, United are coming for me, you have to make this happen'."

Ighalo, his agent and the clubs spent the night negotiating and signing paperwork to get it through before the deadline at 07:00 Shanghai time.

Meanwhile, other clubs were calling asking Ighalo to sign for them.

"I told my agent that 'this is what I want. I want to come here'," added Ighalo.

"He said: 'You're going to get a pay-cut to go to United'.

"I said: 'I don't care. Make this deal happen. I want to go to United. I don't care how much is the pay-cut, I know that, make it happen'."

Ighalo says he has been a Manchester United fan since he was a child and is pleased to be able to make the his dream of playing for the Old Trafford club a reality.

"I called my mum and she was happy, crying," he said.

"I know many people used to say when they join a team, they say that they dream of playing for that team. Mine was not the case. I supported the team when I was young.

"People that know me, even back in Nigeria, and even when I was playing at Watford, my team-mates knew that I loved Manchester United, I support them."

===================

Whether or not he proves to be good enough remains to be seen, but I am confident that we will give everything whilst at the club. Sounds like he will be doing everything that he can to convince the club to sign him on a permanent basis.

What pleases me the most about this loan deal is, He took a pay-cut to join us.

But you've stated elsewhere that we're destined to sink further and further into mediocrity. Signing Ighalo permanently is inevitable according to your vision, especially if he flops. Embrace your fatalism. Don't fight it.

Good attitude... and yet another player who seems to see UTD as a good destination.

The moral is don't hire people who don't have a prior track record, especially in regard to whatever evidence you have from extensive close observation of their sheet performance?

I love how you have zero embarrasment about coming on a football forum and admitting outright that you don't know the first thing about the game.

Should we sign Harry Kane as a 3rd/4th choice?

Ighalo is a very good loan signing but no more than that IMO. You never know though.

I'm looking forward to seeing him play. I think he'll play up top forcing Martial onto the left wing. If that goes well then, in a funny way, I can see it being bad for Martial individually as I can see us going for another forward to offer what Ighalo does.

There were a few other teams after him apparently and Barca also tried to get him on loan last summer. He can't be that terrible and had a decent return in the PL.

I think he'll surprise a few people and I'd absolutely love him to get a year or two deal after his loan ends.

Getting the feeling that Martial will leave soon. Ighalo could highlight his shortcomings as a no.9.

I’m sure what the issue is tbh, he’s clearly being signed as back-up to Martial on a temp basis until Rashford returns and until we can bring in a CF in the summer. He’ll come off the bench or be used in the cup games, he’s not having the entire hopes of the club foisted on him.

The reaction to this reminds a bit of when Cech left Chelsea and they signed Rob Green to fill a squad a place, some people seemed to think Green was a direct replacement for Cech, even though Chelsea were obviously going to have a new number one ‘keeper, be it Courtois or someone else.

Great to hear this, sometimes you wonder why a player would be so adverse to a paycut if it was a good move for them, I mean I'm sure the wage at united is going to be pretty good anyway.

They're my feelings too. A more traditional centre forward showing us what we've been missing may mean one player will have to miss out. Rashford is more likely IMO to get that LW berth.

Yep. Rashford is now ahead of Martial in terms of ability and application. The truth is that they both play best on the left. And James too. So I won't be too surprised to see Martial leave. What will be interesting to see is whether we then go for another proper No.9 or let Green and Ighalo fight for the spot. I'd say that a right sided forward would be a priority.

But this was responding to a hypothetical where someone was saying we shouldn't sign up Ighalo if he scored 10-12 goals in less than half a season. No one is saying he should be signed up whatever he does.

Next season I think we could see a selection of forwards like Rashford, Ighalo, Greenwood, James still being at the club and maybe players like Sancho and Werner joining. There's a good variety there and it fits in a bit more with the Ole ethos than having Sanchez, Lukaku and Martial as part of that.

By no means am I writing Martial off as he's an immense talent but we do need to see it more consistently now.
