Wolves v Baggies match preview

formation aside we have to be on the front foot early tomorrow hit them hard and fast, we can't afford a slow start where they're allowed to settle

I think we have started quite well in the last few games. First half performances have been more positive (other than conceding the first goal). The second half performances have been a bit more timid.

It's like we've switched round recently.

yea we cant lose the first goal, we lack penetration as it is without giving them a reason to get everyone behind the ball

I think Patricio is a fantastic keeper and I certainly wouldn’t go along with criticism of his positioning which I think is excellent. Is he perfect? Of course not. But I think there are very few better keepers around
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It seems incredible that given such glowing individual assessments of players such as Patricio, Neves, Neto, etc. how we are struggling so much?

I don’t think allardyce teams tend to sit too deep, they look to knock the ball long and try to pick up the second ball. He’ll be quite happy for us to dominate midfield but when they have the ball our midfield players will regularly see the ball flying over their heads for someone to chase into the channels. They call it the % game. I call it bol locks

I don’t think Patricio, Neves or Neto will score 20 goals a season each, probably not 20 goals between them. And without Jimenez I don’t think any combination of 3 of our players will get over 20. We have many good players but the only consistent scorer won’t play again this season

I do think our defending corners would be better if Patricio came off his line to claim a few every now and again. I know i am in a minority of one but I feel that Patricio gets away without any blame when sometimes his positioning leaves a lot to be desired. He doesnt seem to put himself about as much as other keepers and i think it has cost us a fair few goals. Even if he didnt claim the ball the chances are he would get a free kick but he just stands on his line...
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I said this the other week. I think a few of the goals we have conceded would have been quite preventable if Rui came of his line a little more.

Nah, we will pull one out the bag tomorrow. Donk finally finds the target after being unlucky of late and Neto with the other. Late goal for them after we go ultra defensive for a change makes it an edgy last fifteen.

It begs the question as to why we're actually in a transitional season. I see it as Fosun being an investment company and as such want to recoup and make a profit from the sale of players.

Cavaliero, Costa, Jota and Doherty have all left for transfer fees above what we paid for them and my guess is more will follow. They also seem to prefer buying younger players who will be of benefit us in the future, either by being established first teamers or who will have developed enough to sell on for a profit.

Maybe this a reason Nuno/Mendes may be looking for another club.

As for the Baggies game, go for a back 3 whether Boly is fit or not. With a wing back either side and the pace of Neto and Traore, we should be able to scare the life out of the old men of Albion.

I very much doubt Patricio will score 20 a season though he's got every chance of outscoring our current crop of strikers!

As far as investment benefits for Fosun are concerned, making profits on the sale of players is nice but not the main driver. The real value from their investment is the growth in the value of the company. First priority is always going to be being established in the Premier League. A bonus is being high enough to get better prize money by being high up the league and getting to Europe. Then the big prize of getting to the champions league

Making money by selling players and as a consequence risking not achieving the above priorities would be a big own goal

we go into this game in our worst form for 4 years
they've got 1 point from the last 4 games, we.ve got 2
don't know where this feeling of comfortable superiority comes from - i'm crapping myself

Boly and Traore both fit for tomorrow 👍

posted on 15/1/21

They are, but Neto is not certain to be fit

posted on 15/1/21

If Neto is not available and with Podence out as well we are seriously lacking pace up front. Wonder if he might go with a front 3 of Traore, Cutrone and Ait-Nouri and use Saiss as a left wing back which he has done before.

Surely we would do that on the other side if anything with Semedo and Hoever, so we still have a full back in the full back positions.

Nuno played a midfield diamond in the first half against Everton which worked ok. We actually played with a good tempo and had MGW taking up positions where we have missed a midfielder linking. Perhaps we might see that again with two forwards.

I think you are thinking 4 at the back. I'm thinking
Patricio
Semedo Coady Boly
Hoever Dendoncker Neves Saiss
Adama Cutrone Ait-Nouri

posted on 15/1/21

I do think Ait-Nouri is an option further forward as his career evolves to be honest but not sure Nuno will do so Saturday. Semedo could switch sides if that were to happen.

Not sure Boly will start given defensively we haven't been horrible in my view but i wouldn't be that surprised if we went to three at the back again in which case he would get the nod.

Big loss if Neto is missing, far outweighing the return of Traore.

posted on 15/1/21

I dont think we have missed Boly defensively in open play, but we have definitely missed his presence when defending set pieces.

posted on 16/1/21

Neto certainly fit, but questions marks over Saiss.

posted on 16/1/21

If Boly is fit he must play for me. Our best central defender and we have been conceding poor goals in recent games. Would like to see him playing on the left where he has always been outstanding since he joined the club

To me team selection is about seeing who is available then deciding what formation to play. Not deciding what formation to play then putting square pegs in round holes to fit that system
