Surely the government should be held to account

My opinion is that no one was forced to go to that game. People knew about covid at that stage and made that choice.

Disgraceful.

The Government will just wave it away and say it wasn't their decision to make.

Wasn’t La Liga already suspended by that point? I’m sure Covid was worse in Spain so why did the government let the game go ahead? Or at the very least stop the Spanish fans from travelling as they’d mix with Liverpool fans in bars etc beforehand.

The issue is that people probably died who, as far as they were concerned, didn’t come into contact with anyone who was ill. Covid is so dangerous due to asymptomatic transmission...

Not disagreeing with that at all. My point is people knew covid was about and still went to the game. It’s easy to blame the government but personal responsibility has to come into it also.

Bit harsh because it’s not like you can see a virus.

Government should be held accountable

I think it is pretty difficult to prove and when you look at their claims - local hospital admissions?

Err, not everyone from Cheltenham is at the races, its a national festival, the majority of the audience aren’t local.

As for the wider points about lockdowns - nope, didn’t support a single lockdown.

And Guardian ratcheting up fear among and playing into authoritarian tendencies of lefties to get another lockdown this winter is typical of them.

But hey, maybe the Guardian is great and their tin cup rattling at the bottom of every article and desperate pleas for readers to become members are really signs the paper is respected and in good health lol.

Responsibility appears shared to me, between in order
UK Government
Football authorities
Liverpool FC
Athletico FC
Fans.
The government has to carry most of the blame,
The fans the least

The Government were loathe to close the borders for weeks/months after the game.

Welcoming in visitors from India despite the emergence of the Delta (Indian) Variant being a prime example.

The Guardian is a great newspaper and recognised as such.
The adverts are annoying, but it's the only one I can read for free.
The figures aren't the Guardians, they are from the report.
Why didn't you support a lockdown, they have been to work around the world.
Sorry but I prefer the Guardians opinion to yours, whoever you qre

- It was a great paper. Now, it isn’t, it is an ever degrading clown show that has lost half its best writers, and is chasing American online readers and is becoming increasingly shrill and alarmist
- The adverts are fine, if they were ads, I think everyone needs to be paid for, Desperate tin cup rattling at the end of each article however, looks a bit bleak, no?
- No they haven’t.
- Good, enjoy the leftie hive mind. When you are free from those intellectual shackles, come back and talk.

Do you only read online papers when they immediately direct you to a paywall like the Times or Telegraph?

It was the report but not the Guardian.

The preliminary report on the handling of the Covid-19 crisis by the government and Boris Johnson was published on Tuesday. It praises some elements, notably the response of NHS workers to a national emergency. It describes a series of delayed responses and muddled procedures. On page 34 it states, with a startling clarity, that 37 people died unnecessarily because of the decision to stage the Champions League match between Liverpool and Atlético Madrid at Anfield on 11 March, just as the shutters were going

It tells you where to find the report and the page the figures are on.

It’s the governments own report that is claiming it, not the guardian. They’re just reporting it.

It's already been shown by their own investigation that they are at fault for things like this.

Just an awful, corrupt, dishonest Government that has absolutely no integrity.

I am still amazed people fall for their BS and voted them in, awful people.

In the last 12 years this country has gone to sh!t. It's not coincedence.
