Climate change

Had a town here in Canada burn to the ground last summer when temps hit close to 50, absolutely concerning and a current concern, not something we can brush off for a few generations down the line.

As others have said though, what can you really do on an individual level? I try to live my life on a way that fits my values, but it's honestly more about not wanting to be a hypocrite than actually believing I'm making any realistic change.

It's definitely a concern regardless of whether you take the viewpoint that it's manmade.

Not sure how anyone can dismiss it as woke nonsense. The evidence that climate change is occurring is irrefutable.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What can any of us do about it that we’re not already doing?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

None of us can do anything about it. Literally pointless to even try to make a difference on an individual level. There's 20 odd companies accounting for over a third of all emissions and not much is being done to legislate for it, so the idea that I can buy and electric car or stop using single use plastic to make a difference is utter gibberish.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's why I and millions of others don't vote. What is the point? What is our one vote going to change?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's entirely different. If millions of people get EVs and take other steps to reduce their carbon footprint the overall benefit will be negligible until something is done about the key offenders.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well you keep voting the tories in...

posted on 15/7/22

A lot of people here saying that their individual actions won't make a difference, seem like they are advocating protests against big corperations etc. to hold those really responsible accountantable. Would be cool but the tories made protesting illegal. Also you just get annoyed at not being able to drive on the M25 or whatever.

US military alone is one of the worst polluters. Exempted themselves from Kyoto and in Paris made sure it was almost impossible to get data etc

Am sure I read they alone are worse than say Denmark as a country.

Also read that we are still clearing up and suffering from WW2 in terms.of environment damage.

Nothing much we can do except do our insignificant bit. So no point worrying.

Question:

Why has society gone from being more laid-back like Bart Simpson to being worrying activists like Lisa?

The issue is that teachers these days are too woke and teach our kids about global issues. Teachers in my day got into teaching so they could bum us in the cupboards, and it didn't do me any harm

It’s all this ‘you’re either with us or against us’ ballacks that’s getting rammed down our throats constantly. If you don’t scream from the rooftops that you don’t wholeheartedly support whatever the current attention seeking social media driven campaign is, then you’re clearly an evil, intolerant bigot.

No one’s allowed to simply not give a feck anymore.

So you're saying teachers are responsible for society's poor mental health by making them focus on issues they can't solve? Excellent insight Barry.

Would this be solved by you just not going on social media instead of actively engaging in it? Seems the opposite of not giving a feck?

I guess so. Nowadays you can go on FB and you'll see a videos of things like of a cattle farm where they live in horrible conditions, the great barrier reef deteriorating, places burning to the ground, etc etc

Essentially there's nothing you as an individual can do, but seeing these things makes people feel so bad that they can alleviate that feeling by 'doing their part', I guess.

I do think it is important to tell future generations that they cannot collectively solve the issues I created by being a belllend, yes. Like telling a black person how bad racism is but also that he's only one guy so what he going to do about it?

What's worse global warming or racism?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Racism is far worse. Global warming wouldn’t even be an issue if it weren’t for backward, no-mark countries like China and Africa.

posted on 15/7/22

Also would be wise to remove teachings of the holocaust from the school curriculum as no point in concerning kids about something they can't change. Education is extremely dangerous and is going waaaay too far these days.
