Casemiro - In principle

How does meeting a player, any player, outside any shop whatsoever, be it in London or anywhere else for that matter, enforce an opinion that the said player was or is the greatest player in that position ever, that the same individual claims to have see play live.... several years after the said player retired from playing football.

I am genuinely interested to know.

Just because I met him doesn’t make me any more wrong in saying he’s the best defender I’ve seen playing live wrong. In my opinion, it’s true.

The likes of Rio and Vidic should be the yardstick to a great central defence. They were a great combination, no?

Now, answer the question. Is Harry Maguire a good defender? How does he compare to those two let alone other PL greats at other clubs?

Let me answer for you, the guy is woeful in comparison and would be lucky to make the bench when considering their understudies.

He probably would to be fair. There’s a good defender in there but he might need a new club to let it out again
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No there’s not, Robb.

Maguire is shocking. Absolutely rubbish. You need to consider recent greats like Vidic and Rio as the yardstick. Rio is the greatest defender I’ve seen live and was lucky to meet him outside Hamleys in London a few months back.

Ask yourself this, just how far is Harry Maguire from these guys?

That’s what we should be aiming for.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I’m confused as to what you’re arguing against?

Have I said I want him to stay? Nope
Have I said he’s a great defender? Nope
Have I said he’s as good as Rio or Vidic? Nope
Have I said he could benefit from a new club? Yep
----------------------------------------------------------------------

But you did say he hadn’t met Rio outside Hamleys in London.

I met Massimo Taibi outside a Poundland if that helps

Few for Casemiro was 60m + 10m.

Great to have a world class DM / CM in but that's a hell of a few that Madrid have got there for him at 30.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Age obviously comes into it but 30 isn’t 34 and when you compare it with say Fred at £50m or let’s say Rice at say £80m/£100m, it’s not totally out of whack at all,

Many have pointed to peaked players that have come and failed and/or lacked ambition when joining us. This might be the same with Casemiro but, BUT if not then we’ve hit a role that we’ve not had really since Keano days tbh. Let’s hope he still has hunger, works like a workhorse for 3 years say, providing much needed protection for our defence, giving everyone confidence and allowing our other midfielders to create.

Wishful thinking? Perhaps but he’s the first midfield option for that specific role that we’ve signed/nearly signed in a very, very long time. McFred just ain’t good enough and if we want to play 433 then we need competent midfield enforcer with Bruno/Eriksen and dare I say FDJ

CASEMIRO
FDJ BRUNO/ERIKSEN

That could take us to a good place by next summer by replacing Ronaldo and Rashford (if his form continues as it is)

Personally, I think our midfield is, and has been for years, our biggest problem. Neither defence nor attack can truly perform with a poor midfield and no team competes with a weak midfield- title or top 4.

Look at the midfield of title winning teams - ours or current teams for any decade….

Us:

Ince Keane Robbo

Keane Scholes

Scholes Carrick Hargreaves

Then look at Arsenal when they were winning leagues, Chelsea and now City & Liverpool

Do whatever you want to our keeper, RB, LB, LWF, RWF & CF but without a top level midfield you ain’t gonna get near the top again.

Let’s all just hope he works out, final payday and age or not.

There is a good defender in there, for a mid table club... Not a club who want to be back at the top.

Just to add - (I know there are other factors such as squad and more so manager) just look at Liverpool. They added Alison and Virgil, Virgil mostly I’d say. It’s what they needed and it worked and it elevated them. Like us with Cantona say.

For us, it’s our midfield. It’s been gash and average at best for years. Even during Fergies later years we all knew our midfield wasn’t what it had been in early/mid nineties/late nineties to late 2010s.

If anyone can name me a team that’s won consistently (not even United prem consistent) with a weak midfield I’ll be surprised. But attack or defence? I bet that’s easier to mention.

It’s reductively obvious I know, but the midfield is the lynchpin between both defence and attack. You could have (OTT exaggeration I know) Virgil & Dias along with Haaland & Salah but if your midfield is Fred & McTominay then both will suffer horrendously. Simple, obvious but true…

I think he’s be ok with a top tier midfield and an absolute top level CB partner. He’s not a Virgil Van Dyk, Stam, Terry, Rio, Ledley, Campbell but I think alongside someone like that and a proper midfield he’d be a lot better that what we see now.

Perhaps the damage has already been done but that’s another question

Post SAF United have never systematically focused and sorted each area of our team. It’s been manager after manager and player after player. We’ve had ten years and we’ve not focused 3 years sorting the defence, 3 years sorting the midfield and then the strikers.

We’ve been scattergunning all over the shop with each new manager and no consistency due to a lack of a proper DoF throughout.

As opposed to City, Liverpool, Chelsea and dare I say Spurs….

It’s not easy, a lot of pressure at United more so than any of those clubs now. We’re Liverpool in the early/mid nineties….recent ish memory of success and tonnes of pressure but little current progression.

We need to stick with ETH for 3 seasons, let him build a team and if it doesn’t work then we need to follow what he did rather than starting all over again at ground zero.

We’ve had no consistency rightly or wrongly, no consistent team/squad planning over a 6 year period say and that is costing us massively. Only alternative way out is being taken over and us spending even more ludicrous amounts of money on our academy, stadium, signings, wages, facilities etc. ie a 2023 version of our 1990s dominance which means billions rather than hundreds of millions (I know money doesn’t solve all).

The FDJ chase is over. Simon Stone confirmed which means he's been briefed.

I met Les Battersby at Manchester Airport once. I can’t believe he’s never won an Oscar, he’s a truly great actor.
