Robb - every country has its own moral codes and ideas and that’s their right. You go to another country you follow their laws and rules.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I agree with this.

However, if a country's rules and laws are backwards, intolerant and bigoted, then the showpiece event for the most popular sport in the world should not be held in such a place.

Indeed, but if that country practices a medieval form of bigotry then it should expect to be criticised.

So what you’re saying OP is live and let live?

Pity the qatari’s can’t
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The OP is appealing to liberal values in order to defend a very illiberal state. I suppose this is the inverse of the 'liberal paradox' according to which those who believe in tolerance have to decide whether it's consistent with their views to be tolerant or intolerant of intolerance.

My own view is that one should try to be nuanced and avoid being a self-righteous diick where possible. We're all to a large extents products of our environment and few of us have come up with our values and thoughts systems autonomously. Therefore, I don't think I'm automatically morally superior to someone who has bigotries that I lack. So I would tend toward tolerance of the individual, and talk to them as equals, trying to explain my view. On the other hand, I'm much less tolerant of those who leverage dogma for power. The Russian Orthodox Patriarch wearing expensive Swiss watches, who actively monetises cultural support for a fascist regime. The Gulf aristocrats who sit on top of a system that uses a conservative form of Islam as a prop for the legitimacy of the state, who party like Westerners behind the scenes.

But where is the line for this kind of thinking?

If a country said it was illegal to be Muslim, should we accept that?

I just hope they get completely bummed in all of their games.

My main issue is that FIFA has awarded a World Cup to a country which has laws which goes against FIFA's own values.

Like I said anyway. It won’t be too long before western nations depopulate themselves of youth and have an over population of the elderly with endless migrants from all sorts of backgrounds filling the gaps. It’s going to be very interesting times. It’s already to a small extent happening

As for those who criticise Qatar for poor labour conditions and workers rights, what do you have to say about Dubai and the rest of the UAE?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd say exactly the same thing about *any* authoritarian state that runs its society based on an imported serving class that lacks the same protections and rights as the elite, and turns a blind eye to its inevitable exploitation and abuses.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You've literally just described every country or society itself
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Exploitation and inequality are features of every society, and should be criticised relative to the extent that they exist. It's pretty cynical to say 'haha, everywhere is exactly the same'. For instance, in Country A a foreign worker enjoys the same status under the law, same salary, same healthcare, same freedom of speech and movement as citizens of the country. In Country B, there are indentured workers who enjoy none of the above, and invited workers are essentially at the mercy of their sponsor to treat them well and pay them as agreed. Often their passports are confiscated so they can't even go home if mistreated.

In my view, while there are problems in Country A that we should criticise and seek to improve, if I were a foreign worker in Country B, I'd really like it to become more like Country A. Human nature and therefore society is universally flawed, but differences do matter, and we can make things better (if never perfect).

On the OP, tbh i'm past caring. There are moral issues with every host there has ever been, if you want to get political... and FIFA is a corrupt, money grabbing corporation.

I doubt I will watch much of it, but that is more down to the winter schedule and not really being interested in the style England currently plays. Maybe I will get into it as it progresses, but the whole thing feels very forced, right now.
