I think the quality may have reduced in the quest for "entertainment".

Generally it's the same people who watch Love Island, who are the main target audience for the PL, just the male half of the relationship who watch the PL after building up earlier browny points from watching Love Island with their live, laugh, love bird.

These people have 2 nano second attention spans, so like with everything in media these days, we get what appeals to them. We may have just failed to notice this happening to the PL or are in denial. It gets shown up a little when the teams come up against non reality TV teams in Europe.
