You’re one of the few teams that could do it.
Haven’t watched you much this season, I know Gomez is getting a fair bit of criticism but I thought your midfield was way way off.

Not this season we aren't. When we did it against Barcelona, we were the better team and lost 3-0, which is a crazy thing to say but the truth. I still believed we could turn it around. There is no belief this time.

I was basing that on your midfield performance today being an anomaly rather than the norm at the mo, like I said I haven’t watched you much this season.

It isn't an anomaly this season. We went into the season with a change to our game. We were seeing more and more teams sitting in against us. The line was pushed up, TAA was asked to get into midfield, Like Cancelo for City and Salah was to stay wide since we now had an out and out striker. We moved towards a more possession type game, similar to City. Except it did not work, there were gaping holes everywhere and players didn't seem to understand where on the pitch they should be. This came back tonight.
We've tried to revert back but confidence was shot by then(everything seems to go against you when that happens, balls Birchington off defenders and going in etc) and injuries mostly centred in attack meant goals were hard to come by.
People who haven't actually analysed our games this season will trot out clichés like old players and players are done etc but this is simply not the case. You don't go from top players competing on all fronts to being done a few months later.
We tried something different, it didn't work and we waited too long to change it.
It's now simply damage limitation this season. Qualify for the CL and then get to work in preseason either with some new players and defining the planned change to the system and having the players who work in it or reverting to what worked before with a couple of additions. I'd go with the latter but then some players have really been an embarrassment this season and Klopp may pull the trigger.

FWIW I thought the main issue was the front 3 not working nearly hard enough. Overrun by better talent thereafter. Even the team from the farmer's league up north got a better home result.

Fair enough. Didn’t really notice those changes to your system tonight aside from the high line, though I thought you’d been doing that for a while now, and less pressing from the front. Clearly something up though, it was your midfield shape that I noticed more than anything.

FWIW I thought the main issue was the front 3 not working nearly hard enough. Overrun by better talent thereafter. Even the team from the farmer's league up north got a better home result.
