Fabregas definitely belongs in that list tbf. Great player.
David Silva too surely? Or does he not qualify due to position? He did play CM at times.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm one of Fabregas's biggest fans but even I accept he probably doesn't quite sit on the same level as some of those names in the article. Same with David Silva.
Would probably include Makelele as well, was fantastic at his role as a shield but would anyone really pick him now ahead of a box to box mid like Gerrard?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's the problem though isn't it? Saying best midfielder covers a whole range of positions/roles. Its a bit pointless.

An underrated one is Moussa Dembele for Spurs. I know it’s almost a meme now that he was as ‘good as Messi ‘ but for injuries but however good the general consensus is I think he’s a level about that (consensus).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He was an extremely underrated player. At his peak during the seasons where Spurs finished 3rd/2nd/3rd under Poch he was at times completely unplayable and absolutely dominated big PL and CL games. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player so strong in possession, his ability to win the ball and drive it forward was incredible - oppo players would flock to him and he’d dribble past them with ease or swat them like flies with his physical strength, meanwhile space would be opening up everywhere for his team mates while the opposition tried to deal with him.
----------------
Yaya and Essien both made this happen.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yep and they were excellent players but I don’t think either is underrated? Certainly not by me, whereas I think Dembele goes under the radar.

Really?
I always thought Fabregas was absolute quality when we played Arsenal. When Utd fans have a song about an opponent or a mention of one it's usually a sign they are
top top drawer.
David Silva was definitely as good as some of them. Wonderful player just a shame he joined them lot.

No I don't think that they are underrated. Just that they both had that ability to win the ball, then drive forwards with it into the heart of the opponents defence, causing space to open up for others. Pogba could actually have that kind of impact when he was interested. But we didn't see it anywhere near enough.
Others had more longevity at a higher level, but 12/13 Yaya Toure is the best season I can remember a CM having in the Premier League.
Think it's fair to say Rodri KDB Gundogan is the best midfield 3 in PL history.
For me Giggs Becks Scholes and Keane is still the best 4 man midfield though.
Of course football formations have changed a lot of late too. I do miss the days of 442 though. Just more to my taste.
Sorry, I meant 13/14 Yaya Toure.
The likes of Yaya or Makelele shouldn't even be in the conversation. They didn't have the longevity, as good as they were. I'd have Kante over either of those 2.
I’m making my decision on who I’d pay to go and watch out of that lot
KDB wins it, when he’s on it it’s probably as close as football gets to art

I used to but if you watch some of the games back from that era now, big parts of them are a struggle.
I know a few pundits have mentioned it but it is mad how much football has progressed.
Peps City won the title without KDB in the season where they managed to get 98 points.
This season before KDB returned they were 2 points behind in the title race.
Alot of his succes is down to Pep and 115.
Impossible to choose a 'best' player when all of the players in the list are quite different in style, skillset and role.
I always think it's better to compare proper central midfield players - players who were often deployed &/or specialised as part of a pair in midfield (even if they could also play other roles).
On that basis it's hard to look past Vieira, Scholes, Gerrard* & Keane.
There are several players who always get overlooked though, possibly because they didn't play for their respective PL clubs for as long, but players like Modric, Carrick, Xabi Alonso, Gundogan etc...
*Gerrard's best form seemed to be when he was let off the leash and playing higher up the pitch or from the right with Alonso & Mascherano anchoring the midfield but I've included him there as his all round game was fantastic and there's no doubt he was an outstanding CM.
I'd have Kobbie Mainoo over KDB any day of the week.
Your article would be far more credible had you not included a player who has never won the PL.

I think you can argue De Bruyne probably should be more compared to Cantona/Bergkamp than to Gerrard/Lampard/Scholes. over half of his touches come in the final third - Bernardo spends what maybe 30-40% of the time playing on the right and he still averages more touches in the middle third of the pitch than De Bruyne does.
