Bastian was very poorly treated by Jose. It was disappointing to see a United manager treat a legend of the game with such disdain.
Don
If that’s the case and players were ‘furious’ with him being away so much then I can see why a manager would not be happy and willing to get rid. Maybe there was a more subtle way to deal with it but he wasn’t particularly good for us, well past his best, I’m guessing on large wages and not showing the right attitude. Sacrificing a big name to show others no one is safe is a strategy often used and when it’s someone who’s done very little for the club then it’s an easy call to make.
Maybe Jose spoke to experienced players at the club like Rooney and Carrick and made a call on that. I’m guessing Bastian doesn’t mention being away a lot in the interview?

Not the first time at the club, and it as all Jose. Look how Moyes left, the media found out he was fired before he did.
Darren
Does it really matter in the grand scheme of things? I know Jose can be a t-t but this was a player who did nothing at the club and was supposedly annoying other players by being away so much.
How should it have been dealt with if a manager doesn't want you and no one's gonna buy him off you?
Actually tell them and not banish them to the u16s. And conduct does matter, with us showing really poor conduct on numerous occasions over the years when it comes to players and staff. It’s no wonder our players start acting like priiiiicks when the conduct of people above them is so crass.
Every manager has to have the ruthlessness to axe players who don't perform to the required level or make an example of behaviour that doesn't meet expectations. I agree with Daz that it's entirely possible - and normal - to do that without the added ingredient of vindictive humiliation. Whether we dislike that personally is up to us to decide individually. Either way, subsequent history suggests it didn't result in the kind of tight, highly motivated, highly loyal dressing room Mourinho valued.

Mourinho...
The most diabolical manager post Ferguson in my opinion. Yes, I put him even above Moyes in that order. My simple reason being at least with Moyes, we could have appointed someone competent after that and gone on to progress.
From LVG to Mourinho, I believe that switch killing us to this day. Only a clown like Woodward would do this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Speaking of Moyes, its going to be 10 years this week since he was fired. Only seems like yesterday, and since then....well we continued what he started, remained utter $hite!
Haven't players been sent to train with youth players numerous times at plenty of clubs though? I vaguely remember Klopp doing it to someone a couple years back.
We don't even know what defintely happened other than Bastian's side of things and reports round the time that he kept going away which p-ssed off multiple players at the club. If Jose felt he wasn't offering much off the pitch (because he was never fit to play on it) and we had no one offering to buy him then I don't see it as being that bad? I thought training squads need to be set to smallish numbers, why keep an old injured player who the manager doesn't want who (supposedly) hasn't shown much professionalism at the club to train with the first team? Surely conduct goes both ways (again if the reports on Bastian's attitude with the club were true)?
Was there any sort of outcry from other players when Bastian was banished to train with the kids, I genuinely don't remember? Jose did plenty of things wrong at the club but I wouldn't say this was one of them tbh.
Hey, Russbro and Bobbydudes.
Just to let you know I have seen the light. He departed Roma like a true phanny, I understood he no longer has the fight, and maybe always way a complete fraud. I kinda suspect maybe the real Jose was abducted by an alien race who replaced him with an imperfect clone. This Jose? Khuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunt.

Not sure if I feel disappointment or relief.
1982, I'd say not even informing Schweinsteiger in advance that he wasn't training with the first team or why he had been assigned to train with literal children is out of the ordinary. I guess it's true to say I'd be less inclined to take the player's word for it, and perhaps even to interpret it in this light, were it not absolutely consistent with Mourinho's classless behaviour in so many other instances. Luke Shaw. Chelsea's physio. The Europa League final referee. The Barcelona coach's eyeball.

Fair enough, like I said earlier Jose probably could have gone about it better but I still don’t think it’s that big a deal (considering how insignificant Bastian time at the club was), he’s done worse things like you’ve listed. I haven’t bothered listened to the interview but it’s interesting that he supposedly has no idea why Jose would do what he did to him if the reports about him were true.
So sad, looks like José permanently damaged mu82
Ha. I’ve always got time for Jose, he’s an absolute cuuunt but you need your cuuunts in football otherwise it would be boring. It’s drama, you need the right balance, it’s what makes it so fascinating.
I don't mind a cant on the pitch, and a bit of sideline needle is ok too, but José just takes it everywhere he goes, including with his own players and staff. Maybe if there'd been one or two isolated instances, but he's had problems with people everywhere he's gone. Too much for me.
The problem is Maureen is the antichrist so it’s impossible to find any balance
