it can't have been 42, because whatever it was it was less than my 8k time and that's 40. i've told this story really badly.

one of the challenges on his course, he has to lead a squadron (or something) 30 miles across dartmoor in 7 hours with a load of gear.

i told him to think of lawrence of arabia, which should help.

Or Lord of Ring

IF he gets through it, he'll be just turned 24 when he gets his green beret.

I think that (subject to his recent running injury, which is a concern as it evidently happened without any incident) he'll have no problem with the physical side of things. I think he's strong mentally as well, but he's very focused on the idea that he's starting as an officer, and I think he's going to get a surprise about the extent to which that's relevant in the early stages. He's very big on the team work side though, so I think he's got a chance of making it. He'd need to have really in order to get a place.

They had to take an ironing board and an iron

He says the instructors are "really rude"

And he thinks everyone has to call him sir on day 1 cos he's a 2nd lieutenant

My crossfit might not be much, but I can feel the difference already. Underneath the flab, my stomach and rib area's pretty fkin solid now. Shows you don't have to do much for it to do something.

I was so close to that boy when he was a kid. His dad died when he was young, and I suppose in some small ways I stepped in a little bit. I guess from when he was about 6 we spent a lot of time together. Then I moved abroad when he was....wow, only 10. I don't.....this is a whole life that's been and gone....We still had our bond until he was....15. And just checking back, we talked on facebook a fair bit until he was 17.

And I thought we would never lose our bond. But somehow we did.

And now he's gone. To a whole life in the Royal Marines.

I never had a drink with him. I never went out with him once as an adult. I never talked to him about his career choice until the day before he left, when we found our wavelength again about a few things.

But he's gone, and so is our bond.

His dad's brother took over after I went away, and....he accused me of having ulterior motives for my relationship with his brother's kids. He thought I was trying to get my hands on their inheritance. Just total nonsense. I couldn't believe he was saying it. And then it was almost like the conversation never took place. Anyway....they became much closer than I was with him as the years went by. After he left for uni we barely had any contact.

I fell out badly with my sister for years. That was probably the bigger reason. She....she's a different person again now and we've got quite close again, but for years I hated her. Hated her. She was horrible to me. I don't know why. And I guess....I guess part of it was....I mean I was so close to him that I'm not sure his mum would even have been sure he'd.....

....this is YEARS AND YEARS of lives...it's all been and gone...

And I really wish I'd given him a bigger hug while I had the chance. But...it was a lovely friendship we had, and I was very fortunate that we shared times together.

he's so like me in a lot of ways. it's quite funny. he sounds like me. he says things like i say. i mean not....it's only a part of him. some of him's completely different of course, but there is such a big similarity there in some ways. I must have rubbed off on him a bit I think.

screaming/roaring almost every breath of the last 2k.

the last 150m? i just roar at the top of my voice, closed fists pumping, knees high.

a fella comes out of his house next to my finish line holding his chest and says i scared him half to death. i was making a fair old racket.

all for a 12s pb

Start by not roaring and screaming every breath and then go from there

I can't make that much noise in the village again. It's OK in the woods, but not in the village. If I can't stop it then I'll have to change the route to finish out in the sticks then walk home.

J

Did a 10k today in like 55min and was very tired and felt bit sick again. It was a nice route but there was one well hilly bit tbf and stopping about half way cause I got lost getting back on the grand Union canal didn't help.
