They have extended his existing deal by one year. He hasn't signed a new deal at all.

We're probably not in a position this summer to add a CB replacement to the long list. Makes sense to me.

If he's given a new 3 year deal then that's totally different.

He's a very very underrated CB. Gets in the City team for a start. Probably Chelsea too.

Maybe we’d be in a position to sign new players if we didn’t keep extending contracts of average players paid huge sums.

Triggering the one year extension is absolutely the right move.

To have offered him a new contract which would've been longer is the kind of stupid decision we've made in the past and later regretted.

But we did so that's where we are.

We have at least 6/7 more pressing issues to fix before Maguire replacement. That's the issue.

Lindelof and Evans will also be leaving too. We can't lose 3 CB's all at once with the budget we're likely to have.

posted on 3/1/25

Not the worst thing as he’s a handy squad player but it does also mean we have a a squad player on stupidly high wages for another season which we really need to move away from.

posted on 3/1/25

ST and wingbacks have to be the priority.

I'd say another number 10, CM and at least one GK are more pressing issues than Maguire replacement.

Totally disagree.

There’s no need to extend the contract of someone who is rank average, harms the team and costs a huge amount.

Maguire is a top CB if used correctly. He benefits the team.

That's because you're not looking at the bigger picture. I have never been a huge Maguire fan either and wouldn't shed any tears should he leave.

But we need a ST, a couple of wingbacks, another 10, a CM and probably another GK to compete with Onana.

Maguire is sadly a problem which isn't as pressing as the others above. That's where we are.

If it was a new 3 year deal then I'd be in agreement with you but it isn't.

We'd be left with Yoro, Martinez, De Light, Maz as options for CB. Which would normally just about be ok for cover.

But when you factor in the lack of depth with our full-backs, one or two injuries and we'd be fcked.

This season is a write off. The question is, do we really want to risk writing off next season because of this? 12 months gives us just enough breathing space to build other areas.

How am I wrong? How much money do you think he's going to be given in the summer without CL football?

Give you a clue.....It won't be enough to do all what i listed and replace Lindelof, Evans and Maguire on top.

This is the problem with this forum......People are so blindsided by their dislike for certain players that common sense is quickly abandoned.

In an ideal world we get rid of 17/18 players (including Maguire) and buy a whole new team but that's not going to happen is it in one summer?

When you come back down from planet football manager you're playing in your head, you'll realize the error you've made.

I'd 100% let him go the following summer myself. This year we're going to have to fix the more pressing issues that Woodward, Arnold, Ole, ETH etc have left behind for us

Rashford could have learnt a few thing or two from Maguire, he's been subjected to so much abuse past 4 years, lost captaincy and even dropped from first the team but he's just got on with it, not complained...publicly anyway.

posted on 3/1/25

This is a rare good thing that surely everyone can get behind? He’s not world class but in the kingdom of the blind the one eyed man is king.

Saves us having to stock up on a squad player for another season. And it’s not like he’s signed on for another 5 seasons. Just a sensible one year extension.

It would appear so but then none of us know what's going on with Rashford situation. People are putting 2 and 2 together with certain stories that come out about him and are coming up with 5.

You also have to remember this seems to be happening an awful lot at this club. Sanchez left under a storm, then DDG and Ronaldo, then Sancho and now it appears it's happening again with Rashford.

I'm certain all these players, bar DDG, brought some of it on themselves for sure but I'm also certain this club is absolutely awful at handling anything these days and allows these situations to manifest all too often.

Rashford won't be the last. It will happen again.

The problem with this forum is that some fans think the only options are to keep a player who prevents United from improving or spending lots of money on a replacement.

In fact, that sums up the idiots running Man Utd quite well.

posted on 3/1/25

I dunno about that, the days of keeping sheite in-house has long gone. The way Beckham and Keane left wasn't great. Rooney went full tonto over his contract renewal quoting lack of ambition from the club so much so that Fergie had to make a statement before it was all nullified.

And each and every one of those players was head and shoulders above the likes of Sancho and Sanchez so quite frankly fck 'em.

I've always liked Maguire tbh, he gives his all, he takes responsibility and he's very solid in a low block. He doesn't hide like most of our players.

Not sure how he fits in to a system with a high line, but being part of a 3 should help.
