Its not that they don't deserve it..... Its that they are both Crap and are sneaking in via the back door by winning a pretty weak comp, made weaker by the fact that better teams are no longer dropping into it via CL exit.
The fact both teams are having to sacrifice their league campaigns (having been nowhere near league qualification for Europe says it all)
Petit and now Wenger?
There seems to be a theme developing but for the life of me, I can’t think what it is…
People keep saying how the EL is weaker because the CL teams no longer drop into it - look at the last 5-10 years, how many CL team actually won the EL that fell into it?
People talk as if the entire CL is full of amazing teams - it's not.
The EL is a cup competition at the end of the day, that has the reward of a CL place.
It's no different to when big teams get beaten in the FA Cup
Obviously we’ve both been terrible in the league, but it wasn’t up to either of us that the EL winner gets CL qualification.
It was set out at the start of the season. If they had a problem with it, they should have said so then.
Both teams would have comfortably finished top five if they hadn’t been prioritising the Europa trophy.
Elite clubs win trophies 🏆
At least they can console themselves in the knowledge that arsenal finished in the CL places again, maybe have some sort of parade for that achievement

I posted the same yesterday. Most CL drop outs are poor sides. They are not the elite teams.
Sandy is right.
The best teams are in the Europa this year.
It's fine for any other club until it's United. ABU's forever.
Even when we're chit we are the biggest draw in the world.
To get into the Europa this season, by winning the FA Cup, United had to beat the top two from last season.
If it's so easy to sneak into the CL via the back door perhaps other clubs should try it. If Spurs or United get into the CL they'll have deserved it based on actually winning something. A trophy which, at the start of the season, has the prize of CL football attached to it. The rules haven't changed.
We beat Frankfurt a top 3 German team to be playing a team (Bodo) that knocked out Lazio who are on same points as Juventus top 4 in Italy. If we get to Final we are likely to be facing Man Utd who are comfortable against Bilba, top 4 Spain, after getting past Lyon.
Nothing wrong with the quality there and just reflects how strong the PL is in comparison to both CL and Europa.
Wonder what the average league position has been for previous winners of the Europa League?
What does this say for other European leagues? Who cares if Tottenham and Manchester are two of the worst teams in the PL, they're still better than the dross of Europe.
Whatever happened to defending the trophy you had just won ??
In reality then, C Palace could be in the CL in two seasons time via the same route, should they beat City, and win this tin pot trophy, the equivalent of of a European Carabao cup.
It just seems wrong that you win a trophy worth about £20m, too qualify for the CL which is worth probably 3 times as much.
No matter who wins, as Rooney says, both are just papering over the cracks.
There's a good chance Arsenal will come 4th in a 2 horse race, which would be most amusing, then may be the gooooner fans and pundits will pipe down a bit.
As for deserving UCL qualification, any team who wins the Europa deserves it. It is not an easy one to win as 28 teams have learned so far.
I mean, if you win a trophy, you should always have the right to defend it the season after. It's what makes it a bit Mickey mouse.
Rules are rules though, fair play.

No-one is papering over the cracks. Both teams know that whilst winning the EL means a crack at the CL next season, it's not reflective of how well the clubs are doing.
It is probably seen as more of a success for Spurs, who haven't had a trophy for ages, but Ange knows he needs to up in next season in the league.
Amorim has said whatever happens this season hasn't been good enough.
I actually think it's good to have the reward of winning the EL with this - it should make teams try harder, which is why I believe it was brought in. This qualification criteria has been in for ages, and cup competitions don't always reflect league form - people need to get over themselves

Well yes, or if not, go for something for elite.
For all 3 European competitions, I would actually say that the runner-ups should get back into the competition as some type of reward for reaching the final, unless they have already qualified for it / higher level through the league.
Yep, the Europa League has gained more prestige now that they have stopped CL failures being dropped into it, this is how it always was before they decided to give CL qualifiers a second chance.
The biggest scandal is the way United were rescued from the brink of defeat by the officials, they were gifted a farcial penalty that swung the game in their favour. Obviously the establishment want a perceived European giant in the final to maximize revenue.
Petit is just a bitter Woolwich mug, who is about to witness yet another season without a Gooner trophy, despite spending a king`s ransom.

We can all benefit from a farcial penalty from time to time
Nothing about 5th place getting a spot though.
Win a highly competitive and prestigious competition and all you get is grief.
It's a unique season whereby 2 teams who have performed woefully in their own leagues, have a great chance to win a Europa. Will they deserve to qualify? Yes. Is it a reflection of the poor standards of the competition? Probably yes, although neither team should be as bad as their league positions suggest. They are both underperforming way below what they should for various reasons.
Haven't checked on previous Europa years for winners or finalists but I'm sure most of the time it's teams who are near to the European positions in their own leagues. Might be what's helping United and Spurs out compared to others, that they don't have to worry about where they finish in the league anymore.

Lol the referee didn’t give it but VAR made him look at it again and change it as Casemiro was kicked lol. The referee ignored it but luckily VAR gave it.

So I saw Leeds with the Championship trophy on Saturday. Does that mean they should defend that next season as well?
