I don't think Scholes counts as he was rated highly when he played.
For Arsenal Hleb stands-out. Somethings I hear people say about him do not register with what I saw week in week out, which was a pretty ineffective attacking player.
In general I think Arsenal players get downgraded rather than over-rated in retrospect - especially that post Invincible/Emirates era.

Ronaldo. Managed fewer goals at his prime than a young Haaland did in a tougher era.

Carrick is the most underrated player of all time. I can't believe that no one rated him. Especially once he had retired.

Responding to the Op.
Valencia was poor in an attacking sense, especially after his injury.
As a right back he was far better than Dalot though but that isn't difficult as dalot is crap.
Valencia's best trait was his consistency and he was consistently good in my opinion. Rarely had a stinker and that left foot worldly he scored will always be in my memory.

Scholes was a top top player but as good as Zidane, xavi, inesta etc, no. Not for me. You asked for honesty, there you go. Better than lampard imo

I think after years of watching absolute dross you can understand why some would look back posititvely about someone like Valencia. He wasn't anyhwere near one of the best wingers or fullbacks in the PL but he was a decent player who always gave his all who helped us win titles. Haven't personally seen anyone describle him as one of the best fullbacks in the world.
I think O'Shea is the kind of player people probably overlooked at the time because we had so many better players but as a squad player who was happy to sit on the bench and come on and do a job wherever the manager asked you to and give a 6-7/10 most games he was great to have.
Berbatov wasn't a success but he was so fun to watch which is why some look back fondly. IMO the game really lacks those mavericks who could be completely missing most of the game then do something magical out of nowhere. The game has become far too tactical and professional for me, bring back the booze, cigs and letting players have fun.

"that left foot worldly he scored will always be in my memory."
Was that the only time he ever used his left foot? Watching him repeatedly trying to cross a ball and always hitting it right into the opponents shins was very frustrating.

Yeah, fair enough. I actually dont know if the injury impacted him as much as people say though - he returned that season and was still pretty decent. Just think he was a one dimensional player who got found out after a couple of seasons. Was a slightly better right back though.
Berbatov wasn't a success but he was so fun to watch which is why some look back fondly

Again, I think the idea of Berbatov was fun. In reality I just found him incredibly frustrating to watch more often than not. Most of the time he just wasnt doing much.

I think we had a lot of squad players who were ok but had the right attitude and had the confidence of coming into a great team when required and could do a good job. But individually, they really weren't that special at all.
For me, the likes of Wes Brown, Nicky Butt, even Phil Neville.
posted 3 weeks, 5 days ago
Dimitar, and what a great name that is, was one of my favourite ever players. Was he as good as Rooney or Ronaldo for all round play.
But the first time I saw him at OT (this isn't 100% accurate) it rained, ball was hoofed up field, Berba put down his slivovic and book by Proust, strolled over, casually stuck a foot out and the ball stopped. Nobody in the stadium, including players, could have done that, because it was magic. There is so much more to football than the result, and Dimitar paid for my entrance fee.

Butt was more than a squad player, he was quality but he had Scholes and Keane ahead of him. Still played loads in CM and was usually very good.

Would disagree on Brown. He was a talented player who i think would be held in much higher regard if it weren't for injuries.
Butt as well, as 1982 says, was a good player.

Totally agree on Berbatov and the summary you gave in the OP. All spot.
Nani for me. Technically gifted but decision making was often terrible. He was also very inconsistent. He was good for some of 10/11 but like Berbatov he ended the season on the bench.
